Home cinema install: Making movie Majik
'The brief was to create a home cinema and bar within the same space, and for it to look and feel completely different to the rest of the house,' explains installer Neil Taylor.
The design includes two coffered Starscape ceilings, a curved row of cinema seats, additional raised seating area and feature LED lighting. Motorised blackout blinds manage light levels from windows on the rear wall, and an in-wall recess was created to house a slide-out equipment rack. For operation, a Control4 system was implemented.
Speakers are from KEF: three Ci3160RL-THX in-walls mounted behind the screen, and six Ci200RR-THX units in the ceiling (the front two for Dolby Atmos). Fine-tuning, including bass management of the theatre's dual Velodyne subwoofers, was achieved through Dirac Live room calibration via an Arcam AVR550. Content is provided by a Sky Q PVR, Apple TV 4K box and an Arcam Blu-ray player.
The generous room size allowed for a curved front row of six Palladio recliners, plus extra seating space around the bar area
The cinema's smart lighting system includes bias lighting for the fixed-frame projector screen, and a twin star ceiling separated by a ceiling coffer that's also used to house downlighters
With the family's children now teenagers, this former 'games room' now has a bespoke bar
