While for some a living room can easily double up as a home cinema, others crave a private space where they can get away from it all and settle into the serious business of watching movies. And, in this case, blasting aliens, thrashing cars and pretending to be Lionel Messi.

While some crave a dedicated cinema room far removed from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the house, others want to integrate largescreen AV thrills with their more regular living space. This professional install is a case of the latter, although it's true that 'regular living space' is stretching it a bit...

Vrooom! This unusual home cinema setup is the result of a car-mad movie fan who wanted to split his double garage in half, thus creating space for a high-spec theatre and a slick residence for his motor. And he wanted to be able to see one side from the other...

While it's not unusual to see loft spaces repurposed as dedicated home cinemas – why use your attic to store a legacy VHS collection when you can be watching Blu-rays in there instead? – this professional install is actually located in the roof space of a double garage. Designed by London's Automated Smart Homes, it finds space for six luxurious Fortress recliners and a discreet 7.2-channel speaker system.

When an avid film-watcher came to St Albans-based FAB AV with plans for a cinema room under his roof, it didn’t look like the easiest of installs. Fitting in a 2.37:1 projector screen and seating for three people, and specifying as close to reference-level 7.1-channel sound as could be achieved, would be a challenge. But with the help of an anamorphic lens, FAB AV managed to live up to his lofty ambitions…

This elegant media room was designed by Essex company Simply Cinemas, for a movie fan who wanted a space that could quickly switch between bigscreen projection and regular living area. More importantly, inquisitive young children meant that nothing was to be 'on show' when the system was not in use. With that in mind, the finished room features wall-hung speakers, a drop-down projector screen, AV components tucked out of sight in a low-slung cabinet and even two 'invisible' subwoofers.

There are revolutions in progress going on in the Arab world at the moment, but they’re no more stunning than the work done on this Arabian Nights-themed install by St Albans-based FAB Audio Visual (and not a shot was fired).

A finalist in this year's CEDIA Awards in the home cinema £40,000-£100,000 category, this below-stairs theatre saw custom installer Finite Solutions given a somewhat unusual brief. The owners had recently moved into the house, and one reason for choosing it was that it came with its own cinema room. Yet, while happy with the performance, researching the world of personal AV playrooms led them to realise they could make it even better, and have it re-styled to their own tastes.

You know what it's like. Movie night arrives and you realise that you haven't got enough seats for all the friends you invited over for that Lord of the Rings marathon. Garden chairs, poufs and bean bags can all be deployed, but it's not quite what you had in mind when you planned your cinema den.

Not all custom install projects are largescale and premium-priced, as this compact theatre designed by Yorkshire-based Bespoke Home Cinemas illustrates. Where many would settle for a flatscreen TV, the owner of this system wanted more...

If your attic is currently used to store Christmas decorations, old Scalextric sets and musty suitcases, it’s fair to say you aren’t putting it to its best use. Maybe the sight of this alluring loft-based home cinema will spur you on to build your own top-floor movie den.
