This compilation of all things Halo will be a no-brainer for Xbox gamers who have grown up under the FPS tutelage of the Master Chief. All the original games have been remastered for inclusion (which means they still play exactly like they did originally but there’s more texture to the visuals) and there’s a planet-load of extras to explore, too. Featured are Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4 campaigns, with all multiplayer and DLC content including more than 100 multiplayer and Spartan Ops maps. The package also includes the Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer beta. As a value proposition it’s phenomenal.

While each of Ubisoft's previous sandbox shooters has felt like a reinvention of the franchise, this year's offering hews so close to the structure of Far Cry 3 that it sometimes feels like a re-skin. But does it really matter when the end result is this much fun?

Visually beautiful and refreshingly accessible, DriveClub is an automotive sim with an arcade bent, and as such it’s a tad more fun than Forza. You start with a hot hatch and work your way up to better wheels. Racing solo, progressing from Rookie to Legend, takes some time to unlock the best cars – in multiplayer mode, you’ll make far faster progress.

...Advanced Warfare has aspirations beyond those of the typical Call of Duty game. Finally shaking off the ghosts of the Modern Warfare line, this instalment sees the franchise going full sci-fi with Edge of Tomorrow-style exoskeletons that grant various power-ups, including invisibility and enhanced jumping capabilities (more proof that vertical attacks are the current 'big thing' in the FPS genre).

Survival horror is undergoing something of a resurgence right now, with The Creative Assembly's relentlessly terrifying Alien: Isolation representing a new zenith for this style of game. This month's contender for the crown is The Evil Within, which is primarily notable for representing Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami’s long-awaited return to the genre he helped popularize almost two decades ago.

Hidden inside a locker, you peer out through a slot in the door into the gloom of the room beyond. Something is out there, moving around. You shuffle backwards as far back as you can go and hold your breath. Welcome to the terrifying world of Alien: Isolation…

You can’t approach Assassins Creed: Unity without first acknowledging that it’s an extraordinary bug fest. This has been much documented online, and when you do come across coding issues it’s difficult not to laugh out loud. But this shouldn’t detract from what is a fairly solid addition to the free-running franchise.

Tolkien's Middle-earth has provided rich pickings for games over several generations of console platforms, yet unlike the source material few have stood the test of time. This third-person adventure, nominally set between the Hobbit and Rings trilogies, is a deep and bloody cut above what’s gone before.

It's slightly ironic that Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! should arrive on shelves a handful of weeks after the debut of Destiny. Both titles share a similar core gameplay based around shooting, looting and upgrading skills. But their approaches couldn't be further apart.

Highly regarded sci-fi shooter Metro 2033 gets fashionably remastered for its next-gen console debut and the result is a significant visual improvement over the original. But there’s more to this timely remaster than extra pixels; the gameplay feels genuinely cinematic, with some great high-definition lighting and atmospheric effects. It also runs at a smooth 1080p60 on the PS4 (version tested), which really complements the FPS shenanigans.

Make no mistake about it, Destiny is a beautiful-looking game – Halo creator Bungie has clearly worked hard to dazzle gamers with the graphical prowess of this ambitious 'persistent' online first-person shooter. But how does it actually play?

While the previous two instalments in the Sacred series were pretty full-on action role-playing games, Deep Silver's latest sequel has mostly ditched all of the RPG elements in favour of four-player monster-slaying that harks back to old-skool favourite Gauntlet. Unfortunately, Sacred 3 has none of the charm, immediacy or addictive qualities that made Atari's 1985 game such a hit in the arcades and at home.

The role-playing genre has undergone a pretty major shift in recent years, with the Elder Scrolls and Dragon Age franchises bringing things closer to the realm of action-adventure. Risen 3: Titan Lords continues in the same vein, but ultimately lacks the polish that made those earlier titles so popular.

In the four years since it first battered it's way out of the arcades and on to home consoles, Capcom's Street Fight IV has reigned supreme as the king of the one-on-one beat em 'ups. While much of this is down to the game's brilliant mechanics, its hasn't hurt that the developer has kept a stream of updates and expansions coming (both as standalone releases and DLC), offering new characters and countless gameplay tweaks.

To say that last year's Grid 2 proved to be rather divisive is something of an understatement. For every gamer who enjoyed the arcade-style thrills offered by Codemasters' racer, there was another lamenting the move away from more serious driving simulations.
