The first new Samsung TV for 2019, the QE65Q90R [see HCC #298], was a stunner. It combined new backlight and viewing angle technology with improved processing, helping to blend the brightness and colour volume traits of LCD with the black level and contrast benefits more usually expected of OLED. But that set is £3,800. The QE65Q85R, a UK/Europe-only model, retains much of the Q90R's skillset but retails for £3,000.

The Bravia ZD9 series was launched in the second half of 2016, and while we've reviewed the 65in model (HCC #267), it's not until now that we've had the chance to put this 100in beast through its paces. At £60,000, it's out of reach for your average punter, but then again, the same can be said about Ferraris. And everyone wants a Ferrari.

The more high dynamic range (HDR) displays I’ve seen, the more convinced I’ve become that the only type of LCD TV that can comfortably handle HDR’s extreme light demands are those that use direct rather than edge lighting – ideally in conjunction with some degree of ‘local dimming’, whereby clusters of LEDs have their light output adjusted independently.
