We don’t often review different screen sizes from the same TV range. Yet here we’re making an exception
for Philips' 77OLED807, a monster OLED whose
screen measures – as you can probably guess –
77in from corner to corner. This is a whole 22in more than the 55in 55OLED807 we looked at previously – enough to remind us that something magical happens when you get a screen above 70in or thereabouts.

hcchighreccomendExplaining where the 55A84K fits into Sony's current TV scheme of things is no easy task. First we need to clear up that it's a traditional 'White OLED' (WOLED) design, with white sub-pixel, not a new Quantum Dot OLED set. This should mean that its pictures are (probably) not as bright or richly coloured as Sony's A95K QD OLED (HCC #337) – although at £1,299, the 55in model tested here is a great deal more affordable than its same-sized A95K sibling.

hcc_recommendedJohn Archer rates Panasonic's step-down OLED TV as an unmissable bargain for anyone who already has an immersive sound system

Rival OLED manufacturers are really getting started with new types of high-brightness panel designs, but Panasonic has been at it for years – with consistently great results. A catch has been that the brand's hardware-enhanced OLED TVs have tended to pile on the (Great British) pounds.

The TV manufacturer makes an impressive splash with this well-featured 4K HDR screen, says Steve May. But it's not for picture quality purists…

Some OLED TVs are designed for The Batman, predisposed for darkness and shadow. The Hisense A85H is more of a Strictly Come Dancing kinda screen. Pictures pop like candy, and dynamics have all the subtlety of a sledgehammer blow. If you want wow, you'll find it here.

hccbestbuybadgev3This Quantum Dot OLED flatscreen is the TV to beat right now, believes John Archer

Samsung isn't the only brand to combine OLED's self-emissive contrast talents and the brightness/colour benefits of Quantum Dots in a TV this year. Sony is also in on the QD OLED act with its A95K series, in 55in (tested here) and 65in versions that command a premium over Samsung's already discounted S95B model. Is the extra cost justified?

hccbestbuybadgev3With a brighter OLED panel and upgraded Atmos sound system, the LZ2000 delivers on all fronts, says Steve May

I've seen marble less polished than Panasonic's new LZ2000 4K HDR OLED. This update on what has been a consistently impressive flagship TV design for the brand, with its signature rear-mounted height and side speakers, builds on what has gone before, but further refines picture and sound performance with less obvious upgrades.

hccbestbuybadgev3There's a new type of OLED in town – and John Archer is very much here for it

The QE65S95B is a Samsung OLED TV. This is something that bears repeating, because after spending almost a decade telling you not to buy an OLED because they're not bright enough and can fall prey to screen burn, Samsung has changed its mind. Before anyone starts mumbling anything about hypocrisy or petards, however, Samsung's new OLED TV is not the same as the models we're used to.

hccbestbuybadgev3John Archer discovers that sometimes your EX really can be your best friend

As the eagerly awaited successor to the multi award-winning Philips OLED806 series (see HCC #323), the new OLED807 arrives burdened with the heavy weight of expectation. Can the manufacturer effectively evolve its OLED technology yet again? The answer to that, it turns out, is yes – this range usurps its illustrious predecessor in at least three major ways. But we're getting ahead of ourselves...

hccbestbuybadgev3The native 8K resolution of Samsung's 75in TV is just the start of its attractions, reckons John Archer

Great as the excitement is this year surrounding Samsung's debut QD OLED TVs – the first 'self-emissive' displays from the Korean company in close to a decade – it still determinedly sees Mini LED as its top-flight TV technology. And on the evidence of the flagship 75in QE75QN900B, it has a point. This TV is good enough to have you wondering if your budget will stretch to its premium price tag.

hccbestbuybadgev3Bringing Evo screen tech to LG's C Series is a bright idea, says Steve May – but choose your presets wisely…

Faced with the prospect of serious OLED competition from outside the LG Display family for the first time, LG has pointedly raised its game with its C2 TV. This latest iteration of its best-selling C Series line comes in more screen sizes than ever before (42in, 48in, 55in, 65in, 77in, and 83in), and boasts significantly higher brightness (on models 55in and up). Not any old brightness, mind you.

hccbestbuybadgev3Samsung's first new TV of 2022 emphasises the strengths of mini LED technology, reckons John Archer

While OLED had new brighter panels to shout about in 2021, the story of the year for rival LCD technology was definitely the arrival of mini LED backlighting. Samsung, in particular, showed how moving to much smaller LEDs, coupled with an increase in a TV's number of local dimming zones, could rewrite the LCD picture quality rule book in terms of contrast precision. Now it returns with a second-gen model to hopefully wow us again.

hcc_recommendedPhilips hopes to cover all bases with this LED-lit Dolby Vision UHD TV for every occasion – Steve May examines its wide appeal

Jet Li wanted to be The One, Keanu Reeves became The One, and Chesney Hawkes sang about The One. Now you can take The One home, in the shape of this Philips LED TV mid-ranger, so named because it ticks more boxes than a pedantic bureaucrat at a box-ticking convention.

hccbestbuybadgev3Advanced AI, the latest panel tech and a sound system to die for – this TV is a winner, say Steve May

Philips is aiming for the front of the grid with the 65OLED+936. An evolution of the brand's OLED+935 model, this update couples a racy fifth-generation P5 image engine with an all-new OLED panel and HDMI 2.1 high frame rate support. The screen has clearly got Panasonic's JZ2000 home cinema hero in its sights, so what can it tempt us with? Quite a lot, as it happens...

hcchighreccomendPanasonic delivers a bright-room LED TV that sports fans and gamers are going to eat up, says Steve May

Panasonic typically lures movie fans to its 4K screens with cinematic image processing offering judiciously judged contrast and peerless colour accuracy. But for its JX850 line, the brand has taken a different tack, accommodating sports and gaming fans with Bright Panel Plus technology for punchy daylight viewing, and unapologetic image smoothing.

hcchighreccomendSony's latest mid-range TV isn't a member of the Mini LED glitterati. Will that put off John Archer?

Many TV brands have adopted Mini LED technology this year, but Sony is having none of it. Its 4K LCD models for 2021, including the upper mid-range 65X90J under examination here, persist with the 'standard' LED lighting that LCD displays have been using for years. Happily, though, this certainly does not prevent the 65X90J from being seriously desirable.
