Sony has launched two new soundbar models that will arrive at retailers this month, offering buyers a choice between discreet Dolby Atmos sonics or a more traditional 5.1 approach.

The Atmos-enabled HT-G700 will sell for around £450. Adopting a similar tactic to Sony's previous HT-X8500 and HT-ZF9 systems, it combines a wireless subwoofer with a slim soundbar. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding is integrated, but the bar utilises Sony's Vertical Sound Engine processing to create height effects, rather than upfiring drivers.

Additional DSP wizardry, says Sony, allows replication of a 7.1.2 soundfield, with the HT-G700's Immersive Audio Enhancement setting upscaling stereo content.

Connections are HDMI eARC, digital optical audio, USB and Bluetooth. 4K HDR passthrough is supported, including Dolby Vision. Preset sound modes include Cinema and Music, plus a Night option for late-night movie marathons.

Hitting retailers at the same time, priced £250, is the HT-S20R (pictured below). This combines a three-channel soundbar and subwoofer with surrounds (all wired, rather than wireless) and supports 5.1 Dolby Digital soundmixes. An HDMI ARC output is joined by optical digital and analogue audio ports, and a USB connection for music playback (WAV,MP3,WMA).
