Following a teaser this Summer, Paramount has released the first trailer for Bumblebee, the spin-off flick from its long-running Transformers franchise that is due in cinemas this Christmas. And from this early glimpse, it appears the decision to hire Kubo and the Two Strings director Travis Knight has bought a shift in tone.

The first five Transformers movies were all directed by action movie juggernaut Michael Bay, and featured his trademark high-octane action and love of things going BANG, CRASH, BOOM. Paramount's trailer for this '80s-set prequel (where teenage girl Charlie Watson discovers her new VW Beetle has some cool bonus features...) looks – somewhat – more subdued and warm-hearted. Perhaps Paramount has this pegged as a festive family flick...
