Philips upgrades to 'EX' panel for new OLED807 TV
The set, which will be available in 48in, 55in, 65in and 77in screen sizes, makes use of a new panel from LG Display that replaces 'hydrogen-based compounds within its construction' with 'more efficient and stable deuterium.' The result should be a punchier experience from the OLED807's support for HDR10, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and HLG.
Also new is the TV's processor, which is now a sixth-gen version of Philips' long-running P5 silicon. Among its new tricks are the expansion of the AI Auto Film Mode feature, which will give viewers a choice of seven picture preset options (rather than the two – Filmmaker Mode and Home Cinema mode – of last year) when film material is detected.
Vivid mode has also been culled, replaced by a new Crystal Clear option that promises the same smooth, ultra-sharp visuals as before but with a 'more natural balance between sharpness, colour and contrast.'
The OLED807's 6th P5 Gen AI processor also promises to boost the intelligence of the TV's ambient sensor, and therefore be able to better adapt image quality in real-time (across brightness, gamma and colour parameters) to changes in ambient conditions.
Further upgrades for this year's model are a more advanced iteration of Philips' four-sided Ambilight system – with 'increased colour detail and accuracy' – and IMAX Enhanced certification.
Overall styling has also been tweaked. All four OLED807 TVs feature a new 'zero-bezel' design, and the 48in, 55in and 65in models sit on a silver T-bar swivel stand. The larger 77in version gets dark chrome feet.
Naturally, for a modern flatscreen, the OLED807 wants to appeal to gamers. This year Philips is introducing an onscreen 'Game bar' giving quick and easy access to game-specific settings, and uprating the HDMI specification to full-fat 48Gbps HDMI 2.1 (enabling support for VRR to 4K/120Hz with 4:4:4 colour sub-sampling). There's also compatibility with AMD's FreeSync Premium and Nvidia's G-Sync.
For smarts, Philips is sticking with the Android TV OS (v11), plus the DTS Play-Fi system for multiroom/multichannel audio playback. The TV's onboard 2.1 sound system is rated at 70W, and a new feature is the ability of the TV's speakers to act as a centre channel within a wider AV setup.
Pricing, availability and full specification of Philips' OLED807 TV is still to be confirmed.
