LG to launch Google TV at 2012 CES

But don't expect it in the UK until at least 2013...

Dubbed LG Smart TV with Google TV, the new Passive 3D telly will be available in the US in two different, as-yet unspecified, ranges.

The set mashes Google's Andriod-powered user interface and apps with LG's own Smart TV platform. In-depth control is done via a 'Magic Remote Qwerty', with LG claiming that split-screen technology will let owners keep up-to-date with web content and social networks while watching the TV.

Says Havis Kwon, President and CEO of the LG Electronics Home Entertainment: 'LG has constantly strived to provide consumers with wider choices in home entertainment that bring the highest level of sophistication and convenience. Through Google TV, LG has merged Google's established Android operating system with LG's proven 3D and Smart TV technologies, offering consumers a new and enthralling TV experience.'

Hardcore technical specifications haven't been released yet. What we do know, however, is that LG's new Google-powered gogglebox won't be arriving in the UK until at least 2013.

Google TV has enjoyed a less than stellar launch in the US, with launch partner Logitech slashing the prices of its Google set-top-box following poor sales and Google itself scrabbling for content partners. Yet this year, with LG (and Korean rival Samsung) joining Sony as hardware partners, it hopes to grow considerably. And it may have to, if Apple's long awaited TV finally breaks cover...
