Dolby Cinema opens in Manchester - and it’s out of this world

Manchester has become the home of the UK’s third Dolby Cinema. Located in the ODEON Trafford Centre, the new auditorium combines state-of-the-art dual laser projection with a studio-grade Dolby Atmos audio system.

HCC attended the media launch for the theatre, which included a showcase of sound and vision highlights, including trailers for Joker, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and Frozen 2 in 2D, and Coco, in Dolby Cinema 3D.

The main event though was a preview of arty Brad Pitt sci-fi movie Ad Astra, which with its spectacular visual effects and scenes of deep space aplenty, proves an ideal showcase for Dolby Cinema technologies. Image quality is literally out of this world.

Dolby Cinema, for the uninitiated, offers astonishing brightness, both in 2D and 3D iterations, with stunning colour vibrancy and truly deep blacks. Contrast is rated at one million to one contrast ratio and there’s suppoort for the Rec.2020 colour gamut.

And Dolby Cinema isn’t just about sound and vision. The Manchester screen has been furnished with 160 handmade luxury reclining seats. With three times more leg room than the average screen, you don’t need to worry about having the back of your seat kicked during a movie...

Dates for your Dolby Cinema diary at ODEON Trafford Centre include: Downton Abbey (Sept 13), Ad Astra (Sept 20), Joker (Oct 4), Frozen 2 (Nov 22) and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Dec 19).

The Dolby Cinema at ODEON Trafford Centre, follows the ODEON Luxe Leicester Square in December last year and ODEON Luxe Leeds Thorpe Park earlier this year. A Dolby Cinema in ODEON Luxe Birmingham Broadway Plaza is currently expected before Christmas, in time for the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
