Android TVs to get Freeview Play. Finally
Previously, Android TVs have shipped with standard Freeview tuners, and typically only carried a portion of the UK's plethora of terrestrial VOD apps, with My 5 and All 4 absent from screens such as Philips' OLED804.
Hinting at the developments necessary to integrate Freeview Play within Android TV, Freeview says: 'The viewer experience has been designed and developed by both organisations to ensure both prominence and discoverability for public service and advertising funded television.'
'Now, even more British viewers will easily find and discover the shows they love. Freeview Play is already the UK’s fastest growing TV platform with 7 million active monthly users.'
Android TVs with Freeview Play functionality are, says Freeview, ready to launch.
Brands currently using Android TV as their smart OS include Philips, TCL and Sony. The latter has used the YouView platform to deliver subscription-free VOD to its TVs.
