First announced back in 2017, Amazon's Lord of the Rings TV series – based on author J. R. R. Tolkien's 'Second Age' writings – has been confirmed for release on Prime Video on September 2, 2022.
Filming for the show's first season, which has a budget rumoured to be around £350m, wrapped today in New Zealand. To celebrate, Amazon released a first-look image (pictured above).
The series will be available to stream in 240 territories worldwide, and will introduce new episodes weekly. At least four more seasons are planned.
Plot and character details are unconfirmed, but fans can expect to witness the rise of Sauron and the creation of those pesky rings...
Says Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke: 'I can’t express enough just how excited we all are to take our global audience on a new and epic journey through Middle-earth!'
