This professional project by South East-based installer Cinema Rooms involved a big transformation as the space designated for cinematic conversion used to be a kitchen, the owner having recently had a new one built in an extension. So out went the fridge, oven and sink and in came an Atmos-compatible audio system and laser-powered projection.

This award-winning media room, built in a modern extension on a not-so-modern cottage, gives its owners somewhere to enjoy films, music, games and TV in comfort. This well-dressed cinema room, converted from a basement space by UK installer The Pyramid Group, had to meet the demands of its film fanatic owners, husband and wife Bruce and Hilary. They wanted super-sized visuals and immersive audio, but had specific hardware requirements in mind.

Dug out of a basement in a London property, the first domestic IMAX cinema in Europe is certainly one of UK installer Cornflake's most prestigious projects. Built around the cinema company's Theatre Palais specification (there's an even more premium flavour for larger setups), it uses its custom projection and surround sound speaker/amp technologies to provide a state-of-the-art movie-watching experience.

The owner of this cinema room has an extra reason to love it – last year it was crowned Best Home Cinema in the £40,000-£100,000 category in the CEDIA Awards. Completed by London/south coast-based pro outfit Pyramid AV, it features native 4K projection and a state-of-the-art Dolby Atmos speaker configuration.

Not everyone has the space, or the desire, for a dedicated home cinema room where watching movies takes precedent over everything else. In this case a multi-purpose 'media room' is in order, where everyday living and high-performance AV entertainment live side by side.

While for some a living room can easily double up as a home cinema, others crave a private space where they can get away from it all and settle into the serious business of watching movies. And, in this case, blasting aliens, thrashing cars and pretending to be Lionel Messi.
