This year, projection specialist Epson has rejigged its product lineup to target the bigscreen movie fan who wants to step up from a £1,000 model but isn't ready to enter the competitive mid-range market where Sony and JVC are also trading blows. The result is the EH-TW7200, its 'entry-level' 3D model that retails for approximately £1,900 – a price point that other brands often ignore.

The 4K world is confusing for punters. Is it 4K or UHD? Do you need an HDMI 2.0 socket for proper 4K playback? Is ‘true’ 4K 4,096 x 2,160 or 3,840 x 2,160? What compression/coding format will eventual 4K discs use? And so it goes. Frankly, the last thing the burgeoning 4K world needs is a projector that can take in 4K content, uses a technology called e-shift 4K but isn’t actually a 4K projector. Except that in some ways it sort of is.

While there are a plethora of PJs available for around a grand, most will ask you to make some sort of sacrifice when it comes to visual performance, usually in terms of resolution or black level. After all, something has to give to hit that price point. Seemingly this isn’t the case with Optoma’s HD30 Full HD DLP offering. This precocious single-chipper throws an image that looks like it comes from a cabinet costing twice as much.

Is the ultra short-throw projector finally about to storm the home entertainment market? A staple of corporates and education, their ability to cast a huge image when placed close to a wall, rather than rely on a long throw and screen, would seem to make them ideal for domestic applications. Other brands have hinted as much – LG has touted its prohibitively expensive Hecto laser projector Stateside, while Sony recently presented 4K short-throw projection as a home-of-tomorrow concept. At £1,500, the Philips LED DLP-powered Screeneo is a rather more real-world proposition.

Having made many of our favourite projectors in recent years, Epson suffered a dip in form last year – especially in light of the improvements made by some rivals. The gentle criticism it received seems to have galvanised the world’s best-selling projector brand into action, for with the TW9200W it's right back at the top of its game.

Although called a 'home projector', Epson's EH-TW490 is compact, weighs only 2.4kg and even arrives with a neat travelling case – in this regard, it looks like it's been designed as much for the travelling salesman as the movie-mad AV enthusiast. Furthermore, the resolution is only 1,280 x 800 (essentially 720p), although connectivity does include HDMI, so cash-strapped BD fans may well be interested.

In a perfect world we’d all be able to set ourselves up with one of Sony’s ground-breaking VPL-VW500ES 4K projectors. But most of us don’t live in a perfect world, or anything close. Finding the £8,800 necessary for a VPL-VW500ES just isn’t an option.

Unless you’re one of those weird PC gamers who thinks the zenith of gaming is to play exceptionally high-resolution games on tiny screens, you’re probably of the opinion that quality games are best enjoyed on big screens. Especially now that a new generation of consoles is nearly upon us, promising even greater graphical prowess.

With rival projection technologies struggling to get their 4K acts together, Sony has been quick to seize the next-gen initiative with its SXRD system, and having launched the stellar 4K-resolution VPL-VW1000ES around 18 months ago, it’s now out to blow your minds with the VPL-VW500ES.

I know what you’re thinking: how in the name of Citizen Kane can any home cinema ‘toy’ like the SIM2 Super Lumis justify a price of £37,000? Well, I'm going to tell you. And if I do my job right, by the end the only question you’ll be asking will be ‘Where can I get my hands on 37 grand?’.

While we rapturously praised JVC’s decision to turn its traditional D-ILA projection trio into a quartet this year when reviewing the outstanding DLA-X55 addition to the range, it occurred to us that that model's excellence potentially caused the brand a problem. In previous years the step up from JVC’s entry-level projectors to the mid-range equivalents of this year’s DLA-X75 was clearly defined. Now, though, you may wonder if the DLA-X75 can up the ante enough from the DLA-X55 to justify its extra £1,500 or so cost.

Most of Acer's projectors have been aimed at commercial and educational users, but a handful have been designed with home cinema in mind. Of these, the latest is the H7532BD. Surprisingly compact, this Full HD 1080p PJ sports all of the connectivity you'll find on bulkier units. First and foremost are the two HDMI inputs, which will accept 3D signals from suitable Blu-ray players, although no pairs of the necessary Active shutter glasses are supplied.

First impressions of the unboxed H1080 from Vivitek are promising. Its exterior manages a combination of seriousness and glamour - with its glossy white finish - that we don’t often see in the budget projector world.

Design-wise, the HD25 is passably attractive by budget projection standards, thanks to its gloss white finish and curved forward edge. Casual users will appreciate its small, cupboard-friendly footprint – though this does raise concerns about running noise issues.

Epson's TW6100 certainly looks like it means business, and its big, centrally-mounted lens and glossy black finish all smack of a projector with serious home cinema ambitions. Its on-paper specs look very promising as well. In addition to the inevitable Full HD resolution, this LCD-based PJ claims a contrast ratio of 40,000:1, and a high brightness of 2,300 Lumens. The TW6100 also delivers Full HD Active 3D playback, with one pair of rechargeable RF-type 3D glasses included.
