hcc_recommendedThis £2,550 PJ is the more expensive brother to the previously reviewed EH-TW7400. Does it do enough to warrant the extra money?

hcc_recommendedIs BenQ's flagship PJ as accurate as the company claims, asks Steve Withers?

BenQ has made some bold boasts about its new CinePrime series of projectors, and especially the flagship W5700 reviewed here. As with the lower-cost W2700 [see HCC #299], it incorporates CinematicColor technology, but here the company claims it reaches 100 per cent of the wide colour gamut used by UHD Blu-rays, making it the first single-chip DLP 4K home projector to achieve the feat.

With its smart design, LED light source and powerful soundbar sonics, the ViewSonic X10-4K bucks the projector trend.

'Badges? We don't need no (stinking) badges!' So declared Mexican bandit Gold Hat (Alfonso Bedoya) in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. He clearly wasn't an AV fan. We all love badges. And there's no shortage on Epson's latest projector, the EH-TW7400: 3LCD, 3D, 4K Enhancement, HDR and Pro UHD. The latter is a new one on me. But that's fine. The more the merrier.

The wave of affordable 4K projectors just keeps on coming – I now find myself lapping up an impressively talented 4K (and HDR) projector from BenQ that costs just £1,200. And 3D fans will be ecstatic to learn that, unusually in today’s projector and TV world, the TK800 supports 3D playback, making it a possible upgrade to anyone clinging on to a Full HD 3D model.

'Progress always comes late'. Projectionist Alfredo said that of non-combustible film in Cinema Paradiso, but he might well have been talking about 4K home cinema projection. The technology has reluctantly, and expensively, trailed UHD flatscreens. But thanks to a new generation of DLP models, it has finally put on a welcome spurt.

Black level performance, colour vibrancy and raw resolution are widely recognised as the holy trinity of home cinema projection, and with the 4K HDR-capable UHZ65, Optoma comes close to giving movie fans a suitably religious experience.

I wouldn’t normally describe a £15,000 home entertainment product as a bargain. But in the case of the Sony VPL-VW760ES projector, I'm more than happy to make an exception.

It used to be fairly easy to predict what each new generation of JVC projector would give you. A bit more brightness, even more contrast, and maybe a new calibration tool or two. It’s starting to look, though, as if JVC has gone as far as it can in contrast and brightness terms with its proprietary D-ILA projection tech. The new DLA-X5900 reviewed here claims the same 1,800 Lumens brightness and 400,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio figures delivered by its predecessor, the X5500.

It’s been a long time coming, but finally the DLP camp is rolling out UHD projectors for the home. Until now, if you wanted 2160p resolution on the biggest of screens, your choice was either to buy one of Sony’s native SXRD offerings or opt for a pixel-shifting pretender from JVC or Epson. The arrival of DLP 4K seeks to blow that cosy duopoly out of the water.
