Onkyo launches mid-range AV receiver duo

Nine-channel TX-RZ730 and TX-RZ830 are multiroom-ready and THX certified

Onkyo has announced a pair of Dolby Atmos and DTS:X AV receivers with THX certification, multiroom smarts and up-to-the-minute connectivity.

Both the Onkyo TX-RZ730 and TX-RZ830 (pictured) are 9.2-channel designs, claiming 175W-per-channel and 180W-per-channel respectively. The receivers have earned THX-Select certifcation, passing a benchmark that says they're ready to rock mid-sized cinema rooms up to 2,000 cubic feet. 11.2-channel preouts allow the TX-RZ730 and TX-RZ830 to process 7.2.4 surround sound when used with additional amplification.

In addition to their Atmos/DTS:X credentials (and Dolby Surround and DTS Neural:X upmixing), the new Onkyo AVRs can passthrough next-gen video formats via HDMI. The HDR10, HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) and Dolby Vision formats are supported, as well as 4K/60p, BT.2020, 4:4:4 video with HDCP 2.2 copy protection. The models feature seven HDMI inputs and twin outputs – only the front HDMI input isn't 4K ready.

As befits a modern AV receiver, both models offer network audio streaming and multiroom options. Hi-res playback is offered over a network connection or USB connection, with file support including 24-bit/192kHz FLAC, WAV and AIFF, plus DSD 5.6MHz on the TX-RZ730 and DSD 11.2MHz on the TX-RZ830. The latter model also features a Pure Direct mode to please audiophiles.

Chromecast Built-in supports music streaming from compatible Chromecast apps, with playback controllable via voice through a Google Assistant smart speaker. When it comes to multiroom, the AVRs can also work with the DTS Play-Fi and FlareConnect ecosystems.

For automated room EQ/calibration, the TX-RZ730 and TX-RZ830 feature the Accu EQ Advance suite.

Both models are available in silver or black finishes.

The Onkyo TX-RZ730 is priced at £900; the Onkyo TX-RZ830 is priced at £1,100.
