Sony unveils new 4K home cinema projector
Sony has announced a new 4K home cinema projector to sit alongside the £16,800 VPL-VW1000ES. The new VPL-VW500ES will be priced at £8,500 when it goes on sale at the end of October and supports the newly ratified HDMI 2.0 specification, allowing it to play 4K/60P content.
The new projector offers DCI-based 4096 x 2160 image resolution using native 4K SXRD panels that utilise Sony's 4K expertise from the professional digital cinema market. The VPL-VW500ES also features the brand's Super Resolution 4K upscaler, dubbed 'Reality Creation', and uses an original 4K upscaling algorithm designed for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's 'Mastered in 4K' Blu-ray releases.
Other specifications include 1,700 ANSI Lumen brightness and a claimed 200,000:1 contrast ratio. Colour reproduction is handled by Sony's TRILUMINOS display technology, an enhanced optical engine and a range of auto- and manual calibration features. The VPL-VW500ES also features a 2.06 zoom powered lens and a built-in RF transmitter for greater installation flexibility for 3D-freaks.
