Sharp to unleash 80in and 70in LED TVs

Monster displays offer third-gen Quattron 3D technology, slim design

The goggle-eyed boffins at Sharp have today announced the launch of new flagship 80in and 70in TVs, making the Japanese brand the go-to option for ultra-bigscreen fanatics not interested in an Ultra HD display.

The two models are the LC-80LE857 and LC-70LE857 (pictured). These screens headline Sharp’s AQUOS LED range, utilising third-generation Quattron 3D and 800Hz Active motion technology.

Says Alberico Lissoni, VP Consumer Electronics for Sharp Europe: 'Whether you’re a sports fan who wants to be in the stadium, or you’re looking for that cinema experience at home, the LE857K series makes you feel like you’re there. Don’t just watch it, get immersed in the action.'

Thankfully, these giant displays arrive with neat styling, including a slim 15mm pure aluminium bezel and the current buzzword - a 'floating' stand.

Smart features are catered for by Sharp's AQUOS NET+, which collects broadcast TV, internet, social networking, apps, video-on-demand and home media into one interface. Additional trickery includes a Wallpaper mode, which, says Sharp, 'turns the TV into a piece of art or photo frame' when in stand-by mode, by displaying a chosen image with a low brightness level to look as real as possible.

Also announced is an Android and iOS remote app for smartphone and tablet control, dubbed AQUOS Remote Lite.

The Sharp LC-80LE857K and LC-70LE857K should be available to buy later this month. We're still waiting for confirmation on UK pricing, although one of our sources did suggest a €5,000 tag for the 70in model which, if true, would indicate a slight shift in the brand's pricing strategy. Previously, it offered a 60in set for a mere £2,300.

Oh, and apparently Active 3D glasses will be an optional extra.
