Sonic the Hedgehog 2 prepped for 4K Blu-ray release on August 8

Paramount has announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will be released on 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD on August 8, following its 'download and keep' debut on digital platforms on June 15.

Accompanying the film on the BD and 4K BD platters will be a new animated short – starring Sonic, Tails and Knuckles – titled 'Sonic Drone Home', plus other extra (as yet unconfirmed) bonus features.

Paramount is also releasing a double-pack featuring both Sonic movies on the same day.

The film, which again stars James Marsden, Jim Carrey and Tika Sumpter in human roles, plus the voice of Ben Schwartz as the speedy, blue erinaceinae, has earned around $400m at the box office, making it more successful than its 2020 predecessor (although that movie's performance was hampered by the COVID pandemic).

Idris Elba joins the cast list as the voice of Sonic's rival Knuckles, and is set to return in a spin-off TV series for the Paramount+ streaming platform. A third movie in the franchise is also in development.

Gamers, meanwhile, can snap up Sonic Origins, a remastered collection of original Sonic The Hedgehog games from the SEGA days, on June 23. Priced from £32.99, it will be available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.
