Canton doubles down on new soundbase speakers

Two new soundbase speakers from German audio specialist Canton are arriving in UK stores, targeting shoppers who want to boost the sound performance of their largescreen TV.

Both the DM76 (priced £450) and DM101 (priced £550, pictured) utilise the increased cabinet space over a traditional soundbar to bolster their front-firing speaker arrays with downfiring bass drivers. The models' four 4in woofers help Canton claim a cinematic low-frequency response of 35Hz.

The DM76, which measures 72.5cm wide as is designed for screens from 40in, also employs a pair of 2.5in midrange drivers and twin 1in fabric dome tweeters. The larger DM101 (100cm wide, designed for 50in+ TVs) adds an extra pair of midrange units.

Driving both models is an onboard 200W amplifier. While designated as 2.1 soundstage designs with Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, the soundbases also offer virtual surround modes include one specifically for music playback. User tweaks include treble, midrange and bass ajdustment, a trio of EQ presets, and a Voice Mode to give dialogue a boost.

As with previous Canton soundbases, HDMI connectivity is eschewed. Instead, hookup to a TV comes via coaxial and optical digital audio inputs, and phono analogue – there's also aptX Bluetooth for smart device streaming. Bass can be boosted by an external subwoofer via a subwoofer pre-out connection.

Both the DM76 and DM101 are supplied with an IR-learning remote, and use reinforced HDF cabinets rated to support loads up to 40kg, topped off by heat-treated glass. Finish options are black or silver.

Says Canton: 'Whether you’re watching TV, enjoying a movie, playing a video game or listening to music, the DM76 and DM101 ensure your entertainment experience is far more captivating than if you rely on your TV’s tinny built-in speakers.'
