Set 60 years prior to the events of The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit tells the story of reluctant adventurer Bilbo Baggins, who joins the wizard Gandalf and a group of dwarves on a quest to reclaim their former home and the treasure it contains from the dragon Smaug. Or, at least, that's the idea behind J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved children's book.

If we didn't know better, we'd swear that Peter Jackson was deliberately aping the Star Wars saga with his mammoth blockbuster franchise. As with George Lucas's space opera, Jackson's fantasy series kicked off with a well-received trilogy that helped revolutionise the film industry, before returning after a lengthy gap with a trio of unsatisfying prequels that seem more concerned with the technology used to create them than the story they tell.

This second instalment in Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy highlights the real flaws in the filmmaker's plan to spread the plot of what is a fairly slight book across three films.

During the late 1950s Hammer Film Productions reinvented itself as the UK's leading purveyor of cinematic shockers with The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) and Dracula (1958). But in 1959 the studio took a brief break from raiding Universal's catalogue of classic monsters to tackle one of Britain's best-loved literary icons – Sherlock Holmes.

Cult label Arrow Video has pulled out all the stops with this three-disc edition of Lucio Fulci’s legendary shocker. The Blu-ray disc includes a restored AVC 2.40:1 1080p presentation of the film that suffers a little from the digitised look familiar to Arrow releases (but still marks a general improvement in this regard for the company) accompanied by LPCM 2.0 Italian and English tracks, two commentaries and a series of interviews (including a general piece celebrating the ‘Ladies of Italian Horror’). This content is replicated in SD on an accompanying DVD platter. A second DVD offers a Q&A, deleted scene and various vintage trailers.

If the first Hunger Games was Hollywood's answer to Battle Royale, this sequel expands the concept considerably. The first half of its lengthy running time focuses on the political ramifications of Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta's (Josh Hutchinson) victory and the seeds of rebellion it has sewn. Only then do we go finally go back to the games.

This penultimate outing for Suzanne Collins’ popular dystopian fantasy is a radically different proposition from the action-fests that have gone before.

Picking up exactly where The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 left off, this franchise closer opens in media res, with the realisation of what happened to her former Games teammate Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) giving Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) a new thirst for revenge against President Snow (Donald Sutherland).

It may be based on the latest ‘young adult’ publishing sensation, but don’t go expecting another Twilight. Instead, get ready for a smart sci-fi satire with traces of Battle Royale about it, where youngsters are pitted against one another in a fight to the death in a near-future America. As an added bonus it’s presented here on Blu-ray in its uncut 143-min form, rather than the censored version that played at UK cinemas.

What this introspective Antipodean drama about a mercenary hired to hunt and kill an extinct animal (the Tasmanian Tiger) lacks in immediate thrills, it more than makes up for with its gorgeously moody cinematography. So it's a good job that Artificial Eye's Blu-ray release features a rich, natural-looking AVC 2.40:1 1080p image. Matching this perfectly is a DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix that's adept at bringing life to the film's wild locations. While the chat-track and deleted scenes from the US disc have gone walkabout, the UK BD does include a Making of… and 16-minute interview.

Move over Roland Emmerich, director Juan Antonio Bayona has delivered a disaster movie for a fraction of the cost of your popcorn epics, and it’s a magnitude more terrifying.

In 1994, 13-year-old Texan Nicholas Barclay disappeared. Three years later police in Spain contacted the family saying that they found him. In fact they had been taken in by 23-year old French con-man Frédéric Bourdin, but the Barclay family still accepted him as their own despite all of the evidence to the contrary. Equal parts thriller, family drama and true crime story, this unsettling documentary relates a tale so weird that you simply wouldn't believe it if it hadn't actually happened.

While working on the Bond movies with Cubby Broccoli, co-producer Harry Saltzman turned his attention away from the more glamorous world of Ian Fleming’s secret agent 007 to author Len Deighton’s grittier, insubordinate agent Harry Palmer. The result was movie gold with The Ipcress File in 1965 and the follow-up Funeral in Berlin in 1966.

Originally banned outright by UK censors, this first screen adaptation of H.G. Wells’ The Island of Dr. Moreau has stood the test of time extremely well. Unlike other horrors from the same era, the film still maintains an unshakable aura of terror and taboo-busting.
