Having made a name for himself with horror fans with the surprisingly effective ultra-low budget shocker Zombie Virus on Mulberry Street in 2006, director Jim Mickle has stepped up his game for this even more impressive follow-up flick. Playing out a bit like The Road, albeit with monsters lurking around every corner, Stake Land follows a small group of survivors as they try to reach safety in post-apocalyptic world overrun by a vampire epidemic.

Stanley Kubrick only made 13 feature films over the course of 46 years, but they remain 13 of the most influential and enjoyable flicks in the history of American cinema.

Stanley Kubrick: Visionary Filmmaker Collection is quite a lofty title for a Blu-ray boxset. But then again, it’s one that is wholly justified by the career of this methodical and meticulous filmmaker who only completed 13 feature films in his 46-year career.

Midway into his five-year mission for the Federation, Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) is suffering from a serious case of space ennui and is thinking about jacking it all in. However, Kirk's long-term plans are put on hold when the Enterprise is sent to an uncharted nebula on a rescue mission, which turns into an ambush by an alien horde led by the fierce Krall (Idris Elba). With their ship destroyed and the crew scattered across an alien world, it looks like Kirk and chums have their work cut out if they want to stop Krall's nefarious plans.

After violating Starfleet's prime directive while attempting to save the indigenous population of an alien planet from a volcano, Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) is stripped of command of the U.S.S. Enterprise. However, when rogue Federation agent John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch) starts a one-man war against Starfleet that results in the deaths of several high-ranking officers, Kirk is reinstated and the Enterprise is sent on a mission to track down and terminate the galactic terrorist.

One of the biggest disappointments of Disney's buy-out of Lucasfilm came with the cancellation of the excellent Clone Wars cartoon. Thankfully, rather than wave goodbye to exec producer Dave Filoni and the animation team he put together, Disney enlisted them to create a new animated series designed to mine the extended gap between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.

While it doesn't get off to the best of starts (pretty much all of the episodes on Disc One are geared towards kids), this Star Wars spin-off soon finds itsfeet again. Highlights include Obi-Wan going undercover as a bounty hunter and the return of Darth Maul – which might have had slightly more impact if they hadn't given the game away by plastering his face all over the Blu-ray sleeve. The set's 2.35:1 HD encodes make the most of the show's gorgeous CG-animation and are supported by surprisingly powerful and nuanced DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio. There are also some fascinating extras to get stuck into including some split-screen video commentaries for selected story arcs.

George Lucas' space opera is arguably the defining event in modern cinema - one that reshaped Hollywood the films it produces. As such, it's pretty much unthinkable that anybody visiting this website isn't already incredibly familiar with the films (albeit, maybe not the fan-baiting, re-tweaked versions Lucas has prepared for this release). As such, it seems like there's very little point in going over them in any great depth. So let's quickly breeze through this bit, before getting stuck into the really juicy stuff about this Blu-ray boxset...

As we made clear in our review of the initial Blu-ray release, we have a lot of time for J.J. Abrams' long-awaited Star Wars sequel. The frequent re-treading of setups from the Original Trilogy is a little tiresome, but The Force Awakens feels like a natural progression from where Lucas left things, introducing a well-drawn array of new characters (alongside plenty of old favourites) and representing a massive step-up in quality from those pesky prequels.

This eight-film boxset brings together all but one of the films Steven Spielberg has made for Universal to date –  Duel (1971), The Sugarland Express (1974), Jaws (1975), 1941 (1979), E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Always (1989), Jurassic Park (1993) and The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) – four of which get their first HD outing here.

TV brands may say 3D has gone flat, but Hollywood studios think otherwise – which is good news for home cinema fans still rocking a 3D setup. Here we round up a selection of recent 3D Blu-rays to separate the good from the bad (and the ugly)...

Equal parts coming-of-age story, family melodrama, exploration of femininity and homage to Alfred Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt, the Hollywood debut of director Park Chan-wook is just as unusual and twisted as his earlier Korean thrillers Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, OldBoy and Lady Vengeance.

Noel Clarke stars in this British genre flick about a group of Londoners being stalked around a 24-hour storage facility by an otherworldy monster. The fact that Clarke also co-wrote it means that he should take a large part of the blame for how derivative it is in its attempts to ape Alien – albeit in a more mundane setting, with less believable characters and a crap monster. The clarity of the Blu-ray's AVC 1.85:1 1080p encode only emphasizes how cheap the film looks, although the DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix manages to give it a slightly better impression of scale. Extras are generous, if hardly enlightening.
