It's been a decade since Richard B. Riddick took on the Necromonger's in David Twohy's bloated sequel to his earlier cult sci-fi hit Pitch Black. Against all the odds, Twohy and leading man Vin Diesel have made good on years of promises and have brought the character back to the bigscreen.

In the quarter of a century since Suzuki Koji's horror novel Ring was first published his story has spread as rapidly as the tale's cursed videotape. From film and TV adaptations to a multitude of sequels and even a crossover with the similarly long-haired ghoul from The Grudge, Koji's story keeps being reinvented for new audiences.

In the wake of ITV's sucess with the rating juggernaut that is Downton Abbey, the BBC really needed to pull out all the stops to re-establish itself as the king of Sunday evening costume drama. But who on Earth would have guessed that the Beeb would try to do it with a Daily Mail-baiting cop show set in Whitechapel circa 1889? Both gripping and ripping, this gory crime series' meticulous attention to detail shines through the Victorian gloom on Blu-ray thanks to six sultry AVC 1080i encodes. If only they were accompanied by worthwhile extras or something more acoustically involving than constrained DTS-HD MA 2.0 soundtracks...

With a story that brings together Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, Sandman, the Tooth Fairy and Jack Frost to do battle with Pitch Black (aka pitch, aka The Boogeyman), Rise of the Guardians is essentially the Avengers Assemble of seasonal movies.

Maybe it was the horrible aftertaste of what Tim Burton’s remake did to the franchise, but for some reason nobody really expected too much from this contemporary prequel to the beloved 1968 sci-fi classic. But, thanks to its smart storytelling, winning performances and groundbreaking visual effects (a vital issue here, as the main character is a combination of CG effects and Andy Serkis’ motion-captured performance) Rise of the Planet of the Apes is one of the year’s best and most satisfying blockbusters.

Brazilian director José Padilha had a thankless task ahead of him when it came to remaking RoboCop. Mixing together shocking violence and worryingly prescient satire, Paul Verhoeven's peerless 1987 original is regarded as a classic by the majority of film fans, making the very notion of a remake even more redundant than usual. But despite having all of the odds stacked against it, this film more than justifies its existence with some big ideas of its own.

Timed to coincide with the cinema release of the remake, this new hi-def outing for Paul Verhoeven's satirical sci-fi masterpiece is a must-have for fans. While the DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtrack hasn't changed, the disc's AVC 1.85:1 1080p encode (based on a new 4K remaster) is brighter, punchier and altogether much more impressive than the dull imagery seen on the original disc. And unlike its barebones predecessor this 2014 platter also ports over the majority of the extras from MGM's old Special Edition DVD and finds space for a new 42-minute Q&A with the filmmakers, recorded last year.

What's not to love about a musical based on '80s hair metal and power ballads? Quite a lot as it turns out – especially when so many of the songs are given over to a pair of charisma-free leads who would look more at home on the Mickey Mouse Club. Only Tom Cruise's electrifying turn as rock star Stacee Jaxx makes this remotely worth bothering with. As you'd expect, it looks wonderfully gaudy in hi-def and the DTS-HD MA 5.1 rocks. A selection of additional featurettes about the bands behind the songs prove far more interesting than the movie itself.

The reborn Star Wars movie universe continues in exhilarating fashion with this adventure that gives the main Luke/Leia narrative a swerve and feels all the better for it. While 2015's The Force Awakens got somewhat bogged down in rehashing old Star Wars plots and bringing back old cast members, Rogue One always feels fresh and is populated by (mostly) new characters.
