The original Pitch Perfect was one of 2012's biggest cinematic surprises, balancing its toe-tapping a cappella numbers with plenty of acerbic humour.

The very idea of a film about the struggles of an all-female collegiate a-capella group is enough to send most people running for cover. But trust us when we say this is no mere Glee cash-in. Sure, there's singing (and plenty of it). But instead of overwrought emotional guff, 30 Rock writer Kay Cannon gives us brilliant characters and no end of genuinely great gags.

When extraterrestrials misinterpret footage from classic videogames beamed into space in 1982 as a declaration of war, they decide to wipe out all life on Earth using technology based on the likes of Galaga, Centipede and Pac-Man. And with the military hopelessly outclassed, humanity's only hope lies with a trio of former arcade game champions (Adam Sandler, Peter Dinklage and Josh Gad).

'Bland' and 'cynical' aren't words we ever expected to find ourselves using when reviewing a Pixar film. But then we never imagined that the studio would release anything as crass and merchandise-motivated as this Cars spin-off. Still, this Blu-ray release is an absolute knock-out thanks to its dazzling AVC 1.78:1 1080p transfer and precision-engineered DTS-HD MA 7.1 mix. Best of all though is the inclusion of the award-winning Mickey Mouse short Croissant de triomphe in addition to all of the extras from the US release (which is a turn up for the books).

Credit card fraud is the curse of modern living and it’s amazing how easily thieves get away with stealing thousands of pounds of our hard earned cash. Well, according to director Julian Gilbey’s new gangster thriller Plastic such crimes are frighteningly simple. Based on a true story, Plastic relates the illegal practices of a group of students who successfully steal credit cards and pin numbers, and use the stolen money to sell high value goods.

Based on a brand-new 4K restoration produced in association with the Cinémathèque Française, we had high hopes for this HD outing of René Clément's 1960 adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley. Sadly, something clearly went wrong between the restoration itself and the production of this Blu-ray release. While free from dirt and damage, the AVC 1.66:1 1080p encode has been heavily filtered (removing grain and detail) and contrast boosted - resulting in an image akin to Fox's notorious Predator: Ultimate Edition. To rub salt in the would, the interviews that accompany the film on the disc make use of restored clips that haven't been treated this way and show how the movie should really look!

It may have had a pretty tough time with critics on its original release, but this animated take on the story of Pocahontas has stood the test of time slightly better than contemporary stablemates like The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Tarzan. In terms of disc content, it's also the best of the trio of recent Disney back catalogue Blu-ray releases (The Fox and the Hound and Tarzan) by a considerable distance.

Director Paul W.S. Anderson takes a break from zombies and mutants for this historical disaster movie recounting the destruction of the titular Roman city. Thrust into the heart of this volcanic maelstrom are slave/gladiator/horse whisperer Milo (Kit Harrington) and Cassia (Emily Browning) the young noble woman whose eye he catches.

The three members of US comedy troupe/comic songwriters The Lonely Island star, write and direct this generally sharp and witty satire of the modern music industry. Think This Is Spinal Tap for the YouTube generation.

A wild mix of action, horror and sci-fi genres, Predator remains one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's best-loved films. And with damned good reason…

Predators was designed to be the sequel that Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1987 hit has always ‘deserved’ according to producer Robert Rodriguez. What he and director Nimrod Antal have delivered is effectively a reworking of the original, with a selection of trained killers finding themselves kidnapped and taken to a strange jungle where they’re hunted by invisible creatures. That said, despite lacking much in the way of original story ideas, Predators is a perfectly enjoyable piece of disposable cinema, with decent performances, good FX and plenty of violence.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Shannon star in this flashy action flick about a New York cycle courier and the corrupt cop who is trying to stop him from delivering his latest package. With the unavoidable whiff of BMX Bandits hanging around, it's hard to take Premium Rush particularly seriously. But seeing as the leads clearly weren't taking it all that seriously either, it's not as if this is really a problem. It doesn't hurt that the film looks and sounds solid on Blu-ray courtesy of this platter's flawless AVC 2.40:1 visuals and exaggerated DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix. A daft but enjoyable ride.

Excellent performances from Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman are the twin driving forces behind the success of this morally murky thriller about two kidnapped children and a father willing to go to any length to find them. The dour nature of the story extends to the film's aesthetics, something that this Blu-ray handles very well with its nuanced AVC 1.78:1 1080p encode and brooding DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtrack. It's just a pity that there are so few extras – all you get are a pair of short promo featurettes. But with the film clocking in at 153 minutes, maybe there just wasn't room for anything else.

Following the discovery of a series of cave paintings and carvings that seemingly point the way to the home of humanity’s intergalactic ‘Engineers’, the scientific research ship Prometheus is dispatched to explore what’s out there. But what they discover are not the benevolent Gods they hoped for, but an ancient race that holds the key to our destruction.

Despite being straight-to-video efforts, both of these horror sequels come across well in hi-def. Indeed, the AVC 1.78:1 1080p encodes exhibit plenty of finely textured grain and rich colours that noticeably improve on that of the original film. The native DTS-HD MA 2.0 audio is cleanly rendered and Puppet Master III also gets a DTS-HD MA 5.1 remix. Fan-pleasing extras include a commentary for each movie and a host of archival goodies, including toy commercials and Making of… footage.
