It’s utter nonsense, but HDR gives Roland Emmerich's well-executed action greater nuance, and the Atmos sonics hit like a pyroclastic cloud.

It's looking increasingly likely that James Cameron's The Abyss will finally be coming to Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. Yes, we know that we've been through this several times before, only for Cameron's other commitments to get in the way of him signing off on the new master, but there are a couple of things that lend the rumours a little more weight this time around...

A Quiet Place is a finely-crafted horror film that, while ostensibly about a world terrorised by blind monsters that hunt with an over-developed sense of hearing, actually centres on a family dealing with tragedy.

When the crew of the colony ship Covenant pick up a signal of apparently human origin in the remote depths of space, they launch an expedition to track it to its source. What they discover is a curiously Earth-like world that plays host to a familiar face and a nightmarish new breed of extraterrestrial horror.

Small in scale, but big in thrills, Marvel’s latest superhero smash finally cooks up the sort of soundtrack that will leave AV-hedz buzzing with delight…

Astonishing wide colour HDR visuals and boisterous Dolby Atmos soundmix put Aquaman at the top of the 4K Blu-ray pile.

While Hollywood doesn’t have a great record of making films based on videogames, we approached Assassin’s Creed with optimism, as the games have a clever core concept, evocative storylines and consistently cinematic graphics. Sadly, though, the script here hurtles along too fast and too blandly to develop characters, story, concept or frankly anything to any meaningful degree. Style is mistaken for substance, and there’s none of the balance between mystery, exploration, combat and tension that makes the games work. Nice production design, though.

A decade of Marvel movies has led to this epic superhero teamup. Was it worth the wait?

Considering how many characters and narrative threads this third Avengers film carries, it works pretty well. It's solid entertainment from start to finish, and finds time for some genuinely funny banter.

This crime thriller hit cinemas earlier this year like a force of nature. Writer-director Edgar Wright's combination of ultra-slick action, rocking indie soundtrack, cult characters, music-based editing and memorable dialogue came out of nowhere to persuade us that, mercifully, there are still people in Hollywood willing to take a big-budget chance on a strong script and original idea. Kudos, too, to A-listers Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey and Jon Hamm for recognising this tale of a reluctant but talented getaway driver as worthy of their participation.

Critics may baulk at the prospect of even more BvS, but there's no doubt that pouring 30 minutes of extra footage back into the mix for this 'Ultimate Edition' helps flesh out the narrative of Zack Snyder's Justice League prequel. Clark Kent is the biggest beneficiary, as we see him flex his investigative reporting skills, and uncover the twisted depth of Lex Luthor's machinations.

Still not a lush-looking movie, but this is a well-stocked release for Fukasaku's cult classic.

With the likes of Sense and Sensibility, Brokeback Mountain and Life Of Pi on his CV, director Ang Lee must have looked like the safest pair of hands for this adaptation of Ben Fountain's acclaimed novel about an Iraq war hero struggling to adjust to life in the US media spotlight. Somehow, though, things have gone horribly wrong. Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk isn't just a bad Ang Lee film; it's a bad film full stop. And some of the blame has to be laid at the door of Lee's insistence on filming it in a high frame rate.

The latest Marvel movie to arrive on 4K Blu-ray gives us our first glimpse of the Black Panther's home world of Wakanda, after the character debuted in Captain America: Civil War. A huge hit at the box office, and an equally huge discussion point on social media due to its almost exclusive focus on black characters, it's ultimately a bit hit-and-miss from a simple filmmaking perspective.

Released last year to tie-in with the arrival in cinemas of its long-awaited sequel, Ridley Scott's Philip K. Dick adaptation starring Harrison Ford gets a 4K HDR outing. Now 35 years old, Blade Runner has lost none of its charm, even if its attempts at mixing film noir tropes with dystopian sci-fi don't always come off smoothly. Icy cool, extravagantly designed and with a spine-tingling Vangelis soundtrack, it's a film no collection should be without.
