The AV8805 is Marantz's new flagship AV processor, capable of decoding a whopping 13.2 channels. In fact it's a technological statement of intent, an AV hub that boasts just about every feature imaginable. So not only does it support Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, it also handles Auro-3D – making it the only preamplifier to decode all three immersive audio formats at anything approaching a sensible price.

Marantz’s new flagship AV amplifier/processor duo sets sail on the HCC test bench with the new UD7007 universal player at the helm. While other brands, such as Pioneer and even Marantz’s sibling Denon, have opted for an integrated battleship AV receiver to top their range, Marantz is going for a fleet approach; the AV8801 AV processor frigate and the MM8807 amp destroyer. It’s all about performance. The system has been designed to deliver the sonic goods with more accuracy and firepower than a standard player/AVR combo can achieve.

hccbestbuybadgev3Mark Craven wrestles this beefy multichannel amplifier into place, and then gets drunk on power

Here's something I wasn't expecting. Musical Fidelity, the audio brand known for its high-end hi-fi products, and association with turntable maker Pro-Ject, which acquired the company in 2018, has launched a seven-channel power amplifier. And it's a big old beast of an amp too.

hcchighreccomendNAD expands its lineup of hi-res streaming amplifiers with the C 700, a more affordable – but still well-featured – alternative to its Masters Series hardware. Mark Craven investigates

Those who admired NAD's M10 two-channel, do-it-all streaming amplifier but were put off by the £2,200 price tag (see HCC #304) are clearly the target audience for the Canadian manufacturer's new C 700. Like the costlier Masters Series model, this compact component promises to drag your music playback into the 21st century via its hi-res capable BluOS streaming module, while chucking in a range of physical inputs for good measure, and then giving connected speakers a healthy punch of Class D amplification. Unlike the M10, however, it sells for £1,300.

The feature list for a high-end AVR is now a literary work of some consequence. Modern amps tote a bewildering variety of functions and formats, and brands constantly strive to cram ever more into a single box.

hccbestbuybadgev3Primare's eight-channel amplifier aims to make sure no watts go to waste as it beefs up your system, discovers Mark Craven

Eight channels? When I first saw the spec sheet for Primare's new power amplifier I did wonder if I'd read it wrong, because in the home cinema arena we're used to odd numbers. Yet the A35.8, thanks to flexible internal engineering, considers eight to be just the right amount, whether you're interested in movies or music.

We're seeing more and more 'soundbar killer' products these days, and with speakers in tow is Tangent's affordable Ampster TV II stereo amp ready to start gunning them down?

hccrefstatusbadgeIn these days of 3D audio can you have too many channels? French company Trinnov doesn’t seem to think so, judging by its flagship Altitude series of home cinema processors...

hccrefstatusbadgeTrinnov's new 16-channel Amplitude model is all the amplifier you'll ever need, argues Steve Withers

Trinnov has forged a reputation when it comes to object-based home cinema sound, its Altitude32 and Altitude16 (HCC #287/#322) processors setting a high bar. But given a processor is only as good as the amp it's partnered with, it figured it had better build some.

We’ve waited a heck of a long time for Yamaha to launch a new home cinema hero to replace the venerable DSP-Z11. But rather than update that integrated design, the brand has opted to birth a pre/power combination as part of its premium Aventage line – and it’s a formidable creation.

Yamaha has been doing multichannel surround and immersive audio longer than just about anyone. In fact, it pioneered the concept of height speakers before Dolby and DTS got in on the act. However, with nearly every AVR marque offering object audio setups with speakers all over the room, it was time for Yamaha to have a rethink. Enter its CX-A5200 processor.
