Based on real events involving an ill-fated Navy Seal mission to kill a Taliban commander in Afghanistan, Peter Berg's latest film presumably set out to tell a powerful and moving story about sacrifice and loyalty to your fellow soldiers. Unfortunately, between its mix of heavy-handed, flag-waving jingoism and action movie dynamics, it ends up feeling like nothing more than another testosterone-fuelled Hollywood actioner.

Stripped of his role as official executioner after being falsely accused of wishing for the Shogun's death, Ogami Itto (Tomisaburo Wakayama) opts to spend the rest of his life wandering Japan as an assassin for hire, accompanied by his young son Daigoro (Tomikawa Akihiro) in a tooled-up baby cart.

The year is 2047 and time travel hasn't been invented… yet. Three decades later it will be, and the outlawed technology is quickly leapt upon by criminal organisations. Now, whenever they want somebody to 'disappear', they simply send them back to a prearranged time and place in 2047 where an assassin called a 'looper' kills them and disposes of the body – completely eliminating them from the future and leaving no pesky evidence behind.

Gossip Girl's Jessica Szohr adds a smidge of international glamour to this British horror-comedy that pits a quartet of unlikeable Inbetweeners wannabes against a werewolf. Neither funny nor scary (outside of the fact that some people genuinely believed that it was worth financing), Love Bite should be avoided like a werewolf avoids silver. The only thing of note about the Blu-ray release is the richly-hued AVC 2.40:1 1080p encode, as even the DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtrack is limited in its aspirations and 29 minutes of interview soundbites are the only extras.

Ever heard the old wive's tale about humans only using 10 per cent of their brain power? Well, that's the concept at the heart of filmmaker Luc Besson's new film, which finds Scarlett Johansson playing the titular drug mule infected by an experimental narcotic that boosts her brain to the point where she exhibits superhuman mental abilities.

Robert Rodriguez's spoof trailer from 2007's Grindhouse seems to be the gift that just keeps on giving for fans of exploitation cinema. But while the first Machete served its main course of blood and babes with a side dish of commentary about immigration, this even more violent sequel has no such lofty pretensions.

It's been 30 years since 'mad' Max Rockatansky last graced the silver screen with a new adventure. Judging from this two-hour filmic firecracker, time has done nothing to diminish the character nor the ambitions of his creator, 70-year-old Australian writer-director George Miller, who returns to the wastelands for a spectacular sequel/reboot of operatic proportions.

While men might have the title to themselves, it's the women who remain the driving force of this engaging TV series. Sure, Don is as enigmatic as ever and watching Lane and Pete get into a punch-up is fun, but its witnessing Peggy, Joan and Megan adjusting to their changing roles in society that provides the real meat for this latest batch of 13 episodes. As always, the AVC 1.78:1 1080p presentation is mouthwateringly good, as is the DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio. Superior extras are split between behind-the-scenes material (such as the two commentaries for every episode) and that with a more historical/educational leaning.

While advertised as a riotous chick flick (which helped it trouser over $100m from a $7m budget), Magic Mike is more a low-fi drama – admittedly about male strippers – with Channing Tatum excelling in the title role and Matthew McConaughey providing beefy support. The Blu-ray's 2.35:1 1080p transfer is sharp, but director Steven Soderbergh's habit of given everything – be it the sky, the sea, someone's face – a yellow tint is distracting, while the TrueHD 5.1 audio pumps out the soundtrack but has little else to do. Extras include a behind-the-scenes doc and extended dance scenes.

In 2008 Andy and Bárbara Muschietti shot a Spanish-language short film about two young girls and a ghostly mother figure. This highly-effective three-minute shocker soon caught the attention of Guillermo del Toro, and before long he was executive producing this feature-length extension of the short.

With Batman proving to be a real hero at the box office it was inevitable that Superman would quickly follow suit. And with Christopher (The Dark Knight) Nolan producing, Zack (Watchmen) Snyder directing and David (Blade II) Goyer on scripting duties, fans were surely in for the Superman movie to outdo all other Superman movies. Weren't they?

For all of its narrative flaws – not to mention its annoying title – there’s a lot to like about this assured debut feature from writer-director Sean Durkin. Not least is Elizabeth Olsen’s incredible central performance as a young woman who flees life in an abusive cult to take refuge with her sister.

This criminally overlooked 1992 comedy finds cult filmmaker Joe Dante crafting a love letter to classic 1950s monster movies set against the backdrop of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

When Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) is deleted from existence by a time-travelling alien, Agent J (Will Smith) has to take a trip back to 1969 to save his partner’s life in this overdue third outing in the action-comedy sci-fi franchise.

Since forming in 1981, genre icons Metallica have never shied away from innovation. Yet even devoted fans probably didn't expect them to release a 3D concert movie that mixes show footage with a side-story concerning a young stagehand called Trip (Dane DeHaan), street riots and the destruction of the lighting/sound rig by mysterious forces...
