When African-American Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) agrees to spend the weekend in the country with his white girlfriend Rose Armitage (Allison Williams), visiting her wealthy parents, he can't help but feel nervous about how they will react to his presence. Despite being welcomed with open arms by neurosurgeon Dean (Bradley Whitford) and psychiatrist Missy (Catherine Keener), Chris is still left feeling uneasy by the subdued behaviour of their black servants. The next day, things get even more uncomfortable when Chris finds himself the centre of attention at a rather unusual family gathering…

Based on Masamune Shirow's legendary late '80s manga series of the same name, this Hollywood production of Ghost in the Shell follows the exploits of the Major (Scarlett Johansson), a highly-advanced cyborg working for counterterrorist taskforce Section 9. The first of her kind, the Major is an entirely artificial body housing a brain rescued from a dying young woman.

When it comes to the pantheon of Marvel Comics superheroes, few can boast the same visual impact as Ghost Rider’s flaming skull and motorbike. But that’s pretty much all he offers – a stylish visual that wouldn’t look out of place on the cover of a 1980s heavy metal album.

Having started out with hit-and-miss remakes of William Castle flicks like House on Haunted Hill and Thir13en Ghosts, genre specialists Dark Castle Entertainment finally ventured into the uncharted world of original horror stories with this tale of a spooky ship haunting the Bering Sea. I say original, but while it's not actually a remake, this tepid scare film blows all of the good will it's bravura opening sequence generates by then proceeding to run a gauntlet of second-hand plot points and gore gags that any true genre fan will have tired of decades ago.

Ghostbusters celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, but thanks to its brilliant ensemble cast, witty script and imaginative special effects, the iconic comedy-horror about a trio of friends who set up a ghost extermination business in New York still feels just as fresh as it did back in 1984.

Hollywood's second attempt at bringing Godzilla to the bigscreen avoids the (many) pitfalls that befell Roland Emmerich's terrible 1998 effort. However, this hasn't stopped this new reboot from stumbling into a couple of its own making.

Shot on a shoestring by writer/director/star/producer H.B. 'Toby' Halicki, this 1974 flick may lack the budget of the blockbuster 2000 remake, but still features one of the biggest and most fondly-remembered car chases ever filmed. Given the film's lo-fi roots, it's hardly surprising that the AVC 1.85:1 encode looks fairly worn and grainy, but it is an accurate representation of the source material. Audio comes in both LPCM 2.0 and DTS-HD MA 2.0 flavours. Sadly, the chat-track from the US release isn't included, but you do get a 45-minute tribute to Halicki and five interviews.

Based on Nicholas Pileggi's best-selling nonfiction book Wiseguy, Martin Scorsese's kinetic 1990 crime epic spans three decades as it charts the rise and fall of three gangsters – Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), Jimmy 'The Gent' Conway (Robert De Niro) and Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci).

While it’s hardly the next Slap Shot, there’s still plenty of fun to be had with this crass comedy about a good-natured, but dim-witted oaf (Seann William Scott) whose brawling skills land him a spot as an ‘enforcer’ on an ice hockey team.

Cult label 88 Films kicks off its new 'Slasher Classics Collection' with a hi-def release for this enjoyable 1981 genre outing. Derived from a new 4K scan of the director's own answer print, the disc's AVC 1.78:1 1080p encode may not be completely flawless (there's some obvious print damage during the opening death scene), but overall it holds up much better than expected. The inclusion of a brilliant new feature-length documentary entitled Scream Queen: Horror Heroines Exposed among the many extras only serves to make this Blu-ray even more of an unmissable treat for horror-hedz.

While he’s been a mainstay of DC Comic’s superhero pantheon since 1960 (in this incarnation, at least), you’d be hard-pushed to say that Green Lantern is a particularly recognisable name for most people. As such, this sci-fi blockbuster had its work cut out not only introducing its hero Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) and his supporting cast, but also establishing the concept of the inter-galactic police force he ends up working for, the Green Lantern Corps. Add to that a melodramatic back-story and two separate villains and its no wonder that the film struggles under the weight of its ambitious scope. But what’s surprising, given all of that, is how thin and uneventful the film ends up feeling. While the space stuff looks great, but most of the action takes place on Earth and looks ordinary and unexciting by comparison.
