Doctor Who: The Complete Fifth Series saw two major changes in the popular sci-fi series, with the arrival of both a new Doctor (Matt Smith – quickly shaping up to be the best since Tom Baker) and new showrunner (Steven Moffat taking over from Russell T Davis). That said, neither change has made much of a tonal difference to the show itself, which continues to please kids of all ages with its magical mix of whimsical storytelling, scary monsters, daft jokes and crowd-pleasing special effects. And despite the odd dud like the redesigned Daleks, it’s easily the most consistent series since Russell T Davis’ first year running things. Roll on the Christmas Special.

After several seasons of being exiled to Earth, the end of The Three Doctors (the first storyline from the show's tenth season) saw John Pertwee's Doctor finally being given free-reign to roam the cosmos once again. While the subsequent adventure Carnival of Monsters found the time traveler and his companion Jo (Katy Manning) trapped inside an alien sideshow attraction, the next story Frontier in Space truly embraced the space-faring concept with a piece of pure space opera.

Better-known to those of a certain age for blowing away the Bauhaus lead-singer with the sound of its iconic cassette tapes, Maxell has since embraced the digital age with gusto. One of its more interesting current products is the MMB300, a multimedia player based around the Android 2.3 operating system.

Another story that appears to have been swamped by the fuss surrounding Lucasfilm was the news that Bryan Singer has officially signed on to fill the director's chair on X-Men: Days of Future Past, following the recent departure of Matthew Vaughn.
