hcchighreccomendWhen is a wireless headphone not a wireless headphone? Take a quick look at T+A's Solitaire T and you would be forgiven for thinking it is a fairly standard example of the cut-the-cable breed, with aptX HD and AAC Bluetooth supported by switchable noise cancelling and an impressive 70-hour rated battery life. The reality is a little different though.

hcchighreccomendThe audiophile brand shoots for the top with its first pair of headphones, and Ed Selley finds out if they can live up to the asking price

The No. 5909s are the first headphones of any description from Mark Levinson, and the company has elected to take the 'go big or go home' approach. Of the wireless models we've looked at recently, they've all resolutely stuck to sub-£500 price points. This pair blasts through that and comes in just shy of a grand – although perhaps that's to be expected from a company that sells stereo power amplifiers with five-figure tickets.

hcc_recommendedThe smart illumination brand's newest invention is its most appealing yet, says Mark Craven

It wasn't that long ago that the options for upgrading the lighting in your living room or movie den were a) buy more lamps, b) get a dimmer switch or c) re-wire for a complete overhaul. These days, thankfully, you can do so much more, with Wi-Fi networking and app control bringing creativity and customisation. And a smart lighting setup needn't have you calling in an electrician, either.

hccbestbuybadgev3The Brit speaker maker has turned its attention again to compact, powered bookshelf models, and, says Ed Selley, cooked up a bona fide bargain

As well as multiple ranges of conventional passive speakers, Q Acoustics has been involved in making self-contained speaker solutions for most of the time it has been in business since 2006. The new M20 is the replacement for the long-running (but excellent) BT3, which launched in 2014, and takes its place below the more recent, and more sophisticated, Active 200 that we looked at in HCC #319.

hcchighreccomendHi-res network playback, app control and multiroom expansion give Elipson's latest Music Centre a modern feel, says Ed Selley – but he appreciates its CD playback too

If you have had contact with French manufacturer Elipson in the UK, it is likely to be on account of its distinctive-looking (read: spherical) Planet loudspeakers, or its Prestige Facet lineup (the latter including Dolby Atmos upfiring modules – see HCC #291). But as well as these offerings, the company makes a small number of smaller electronic goodies. We previously looked at its Chroma 100 turntable in HCC #318, and now it's the turn of the recently updated Music Centre to receive our attention.

hcc_recommendedLooking to drive a challenging pair of headphones with a portable player? Ed Selley thinks the chunky KANN Alpha might be what you need

The dedicated portable audio player market is not a massive one, and Korean brand Astell&Kern is the biggest fish in a relatively small pond. Its KANN series of players overlaps the more conventional A&Norma and A&Futura ranges, and is designed to be able to drive even very demanding headphones from a smallscale device.

High-quality Hi-Fi headphones or gaming cans? The idea behind Asus's ROG Delta S is that you can have both.

hccbestbuybadgev3Humax teams up with Google to re-invent its Freeview Play PVR. Steve May investigates

Humax is hardly the most profligate of PVR makers. When it launches a set-top box, it tends to stick around, quietly serving its audience. Its new model, the Aura, is the company's first hardware overhaul in three years, assuming flagship status from its 2017-era FVP-5000T.
