Let's not beat around the bush, F1 2010 is easily the best Formula One game to ever grace a games console. Heck, why stop there - it's also the best attempt at capturing the motorsport in videogame form since the glory days of the Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix series.

When it came to football games I was always a Pro Evolution Soccer man. However, since the dawn of the current generation of games consoles, like other fans, I'd suffered through several iterations of PES that failed to live up to expectations, struggling to come to terms with the graphical capabilities offered by the hardware and seemingly taking a step backwards in gameplay terms at the same time. And the ever-popular FIFA franchise was no solution, seemingly still stuck in creating a more arcade-based take on the sport that traded depth for special moves.

It's almost a decade since the talented chaps at Bungie Studios completely redefined the console first-person shooter with the release of original Xbox launch title Halo: Combat Evolved. Over the past nine years the developer continued to weave its magic through a number of sequels that continued to refine the lauded gameplay template it had crafted, wowing fans and critics alike along the way.

The history of videogaming is littered with officially licensed titles that promised to give players the chance to feel like a comic book superhero, but ultimately failed to deliver the goods. Only Spider-Man 2's web-swinging action and Batman: Arkham Asylum have got anywhere close to making gamers feel like they are in control of a real superhero.

What is it about the Transformers franchise that videogames companies find hard to get right? On the surface it's as simple as getting together a bunch of 30-foot tall robots that transform into a variety of vehicles and unleashing them on each other. It's the kind of premise most developers would die for.

Ever since Grand Theft Auto III first exploded onto the PlayStation 2 back in October 2001, developers have leapt at the opportunity to create their own sandbox games thanks to the computing power offered by today's high-spec consoles. Free-roaming videogames where the gamer can essentially do whatever they want, whenever they want within the confines of an open-world, are now commonplace across pretty much all platforms. But few of them have ever lived up to those Rockstar Games has conjured up for its Grand Theft Auto series.

Split/Second: Velocity is all about driving ridiculously fast and using every trick at your disposal to nobble the seven opponents sharing the track with you. But you can forget all about the usual tricks of using your car as a battering ram or firing missiles at your rivals, as this game takes as many of its cues from Michael Bay's movies as it has from previous racers like Burnout and Mario Kart. Epic destruction is the order of the day, where instead of simply firing a weapon at another car, you trigger a huge series of explosions dropping an entire building on it instead!

After numerous years in development, Quantic Dream founder and CEO David Cage's long-gestating and much-touted vision of the future of 'interactive drama' is finally here. The question now then is whether or not the finished game can possibly live up to our own expectations and the creative team's numerous claims. And while the answer - unsurprisingly - is no, Heavy Rain still delivers a unique gaming experience that comes close to living up to the hype.
