It's been over a decade since the last instalment of the BBC series of the same name, but the success of the live show has saved the Walking with Dinosaurs brand from extinction. As such, it was hardly surprising to learn that a feature-film was going into production. What is a surprise, though, is just how far removed the film is from the concept of the original series…

Claiming to be 'inspired by true events [that] occurred on June 5th 1992', War Games tells the story of a group of friends who head out into the wilds one weekend in order to mess around with Airsoft guns (an alternative to paintball that still allows adults to act like little kids playing war, but without the messy stains on their clothes). During the lengthy game, one of the girls from the group goes missing and a search of the local area uncovers a creepy slaughterhouse. Faster than you can yell 'Texas Chain Saw Massacre' the youngsters discover that they're being hunted by a psychopathic trio of local ex-soldiers who are playing their own war game - one where the ammo is live and the outsiders are likely to end up dead.

A war movie unlike any other you’ve ever seen, Steven Spielberg’s latest casts a horse called Joey as its central character and uses this idea to explore the impact the animal has on the various people it encounters on both sides of the conflict. It’s an intriguing notion and one that has worked both as a children’s book and, particularly, on stage where it has picked up numerous awards.

Romeo and Juliet gets yet another makeover in this teen flick about a zombie that rediscovers his sense of identity when he falls in love with a living girl. As unpromising as this sounds, Warm Bodies is a smarter and wittier film than you might expect – although the filmmakers have held back from giving it the full satirical bite the concept is capable of delivering. The Blu-ray itself is absolutely first-rate, thanks to a crystal-clear AVC 1.78:1 1080p encode and a nimble DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix. Copious extras include a chat-track and seven behind-the-scenes featurettes.

Clichés are not necessarily a bad thing. There’s a good reason why some ideas are reused over and over again. Ultimately, it’s all about how you can make a cliché work for you.

Inoffensive is probably the best word to describe this latest film from Almost Famous-helmer Cameron Crowe. Based (extremely) loosely on the story of Dartmoor Zoological Park owner Benjamin Mee, Crowe’s slightly sappy flick shifts the tale to the US and – via the medium of cute animals and even cuter kids – makes it all about the importance of family.

Forget Baz Luhrmann’s flashy contemporary update of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet – Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise got there first with this magnificent bigscreen musical. Fusing The Bard’s most popular work with superb music, inventive dance choreography and expressionist production design, the film charts the doomed romance of two star-crossed lovers belonging to rival gangs competing for turf on the streets of New York. While the two leads are pretty anaemic and the story falls flat between songs on a few occasions, it’s more than made up for by the astonishing dance routines and memorable tunes.

When the White House is overrun by terrorists, it falls on the shoulders of one man to keep the president safe from harm… Hold on a minute. Doesn't this all sound rather familiar?

The third of four films by the late director Donald Cammell is a curious mix of Giallo-style murder mystery and smalltown domestic drama. As you might expect from Cammell's other films (Performance, Demon Seed and Wild Side) what would undoubtedly have been a routine thriller in the hands of anyone else has been transformed into a stylistic tour-de-force, loaded with symbolism and introspection. Flawed but definitely fascinating.

Jason Statham tries his hand at some 'Capital-A' acting playing Nick Wild, a Las Vegas bodyguard and recovering gambling addict who sets out to help an old girlfriend (Dominik Garcia-Lorido) after she's assaulted by sadistic mobster (Milo Ventimiglia).

Having re-invigorated the sci-fi genre with Star Wars, George Lucas turned his attention to the fantasy world in 1988. Sadly, Willow failed to live up to expectations, thanks to the combination of its relentlessly formulaic narrative and Ron Howard's lifeless direction. Indeed, these days it's only really remembered for its use of early digital morphing effects.

Mixing together epic action spectacle and romantic melodrama to tell a story of two World War I fighter pilots in love with the same woman, William Wellman's Wings is in many ways the silent film equivalent of Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor. The difference is that Wellman's film gives us actual characters to root for alongside the astonishing eye-candy – no wonder that it went on to scoop the first ever Academy Award for Best Picture.

Winter’s Bone has been garnered with praise and awards since its release, and with damn good reason. This remarkable family-drama-cum-thriller stars Jennifer Lawrence as 17 year-old Ozark Mountains native Ree Dolly. The sole carer for her younger siblings and her almost catatonic mother, Ree finds herself in a race against time when her father skips bail having put their home up as the bond.

Writer-director Bruce Robinson's cult favourite film follows two 'resting' actors (Richard E. Grant's Withnail and Paul McGann's I) as they endure a 'holiday by mistake' in the countryside at the fag-end of the 1960s.
