hcchighreccomendIt might have taken longer than we'd hoped, but king-sized TVs are starting to hit prices us regular Joes can actually afford. No brand is leading this 'massive screens for less cash' charge more aggressively than TCL – and no other giant TCL TV proves this point more than the 85in 85C805K, which can be yours for £1,575.

While it took Samsung much longer than, well, just about everyone else to fully board the OLED TV train, the South Korean company seems eager to make up for lost time. In 2024 it is significantly expanding its OLED offering, even dipping down to 48in on a new, entry-level lineup, and with its flagship S95D series, tested here at 65in, it's also seeking to rewrite the OLED performance rule book.

Away from its flagship flatscreens, Hisense continues to battle it out in the entry-level TV arena...

hcchighreccomendIntroducing the OLED+908, the first MLA (Micro Lens Array) OLED flatscreen from Philips, and available in the 55in iteration tested here for around £1,800. That's not an inconsiderable sum for a telly of its size, but as is the current direction of
travel in the 4K TV market, it arrives promising higher peak brightness than we've seen from the brand before, plus
plenty of other premium treats.

Projectors are finding themselves looking over their shoulders as a new breed of ultra-large TV – that you don't need to be an oil magnate to afford – bursts onto the scene. TCL is right at the forefront of this mammoth TV surge, with no less than four 98in models in its current range. One of these, the 98P745K we're scrutinising here, costs just £2,299...

The features and price of TCL's 65C845K just don't seem compatible with each other. Here we have a 65in TV that boasts more than 2000 nits of brightness, uses Mini LED lighting and 576 separately controlled local dimming zones, and supports all the latest and greatest gaming features, yet the price tag attached to at reads just £1,049.

hcchighreccomend TCL's ambition is not just to be a purveyor of well-priced mass-market tellies. Recently it's been keen to promote its range of mega-sized sets (including the £3,000 98in P745K, and – as the first brand to ever bring a mini LED model to market – it's focusing a lot on that technology too. But the 55C745K auditioned here is one of its more bread-and-butter options, being a QLED, and not mini LED model, with a £649 asking price. Does that make it a bargain?

hcchighreccomend The TX-55MZ980 is Panasonic's current mid-range OLED TV – which means you have to accept a couple of limitations right off the bat. What it does have going for it, though, is its price. At £1,399 it's not only substantially more affordable than its step-up siblings, but goes toe-to-toe with big-name rivals...

As part of a strategy of trying to offer something for everyone, Sony has already given us traditional LED, Mini LED, and OLED flatscreens in its latest TV range. But, whether intentionally or not, the Japanese giant has saved its best till last in the shape of its Quantum Dot OLED sets. The 55A95L auditioned here sells for the rather princely sum of £2,499 – immediately establishing it as Sony's flagship 55in TV.

hcchighreccomendFor years now the combination of value, features and performance offered by LG's mid-range C Series TVs has seen them dominate the OLED market. Yet this year's OLED65C3 arguably doesn't have quite the same allure. Why? The introduction of Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology to LG's step-up G3 OLEDs has transformed our OLED expectations, but the C3 lineup is an MLA-free zone...

With excitement this year focused on the battle between second-gen Quantum Dot OLED technology, LG's new Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology, and the latest innovations in Mini LED displays, it can feel as if 'traditional' OLED TVs such as Sony's XR-65A80L are struggling to make their voices heard. But the performance of this 65-incher is worth shouting about...

To quote Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting: 'Ladies and gentlemen, we are in the presence of greatness!' The most beautiful LG Display OLED screen I've seen in over a decade of scrutiny, the 65G3 is everything I want from an OLED TV: perfect black, sublime near shadow detail, rich colour performance and future-proofed connectivity for gaming (or as close to it as you're likely to find in 2023).

It turns out last year's launch of Quantum Dot OLED technology was more significant than we thought. Mixing self-emissive OLED panels with a QD colour layer not only gave us an outstanding new flatscreen option to consider, but ushered in a new period of competition that's already yielding remarkable results in just a single year. It feels as if the premium TV market has been turbo-charged...

The BU8500 is the most premium LCD model in Samsung’s 2022 range that doesn’t use Quantum Dot colour technology. Instead, it features Samsung’s Dynamic Crystal Colour system – a more traditional filter-based approach, but one that still claims (in conjunction with the TV's Crystal 4K processor) to deliver a billion different tones.

Still available even as new 2023 Samsung sets come to market, for around £649 the 55in 55BU8500 is £150 cheaper than Samsung’s entry-level 55in Quantum Dot set. Such a gap makes it look potentially fair value...
