We typically think that home cinema entered public consciousness with Blu-ray in the noughties, DVD in the nineties, or VHS in the eighties. However, owning and operating a personal screening room goes back a lot further. Well-heeled AV heads – think Hollywood moguls and glitterati – have been hunkering down in darkened rooms, adjusting comfy recliners, and kicking back for that special feature presentation since the early 20th century.

When you relax into a cinema chair for that long-awaited blockbuster, icy drink in cup holder and bag of popcorn balanced on lap, it’s a fair bet that the last thing on your mind will be a shape of the big white screen in front of you. Chances are that your movie will be shown in one of two commonly used aspect ratios – 1.85:1 or 2.39:1, typically referred to in the filmmaking world as flat and CinemaScope respectively. But you might witness something a little more unusual – 2.0.1 or a retro-tinged 1.37:1. And turn the clock back sixty years and it would have been a different situation entirely.

Once again, film fans find themselves in the midst of an audio format war. Long-time rivals Dolby and DTS are slugging it out in both commercial theatres and home cinemas with new object-based sound systems. Dolby's Atmos format matured first, launching at multiplexes in 2012 and in home setups two years later. Now, though, DTS:X is hoping to steal its thunder.
