The BenQ W1070 wears its chief attraction right out there on its price tag. For despite being a 3D-capable projector claiming decent-looking contrast ratio and brightness figures of 10,000:1 and 2,000 ANSI Lumens respectively, it costs a penny under £700. Admittedly, this doesn’t get you a free pair of 3D glasses, but it’s still a damn tempting price all the same.

The arrival of any new projector using JVC’s consistently outstanding D-ILA technology sets HCC's pulse racing. But it’s fair to say we’re even more flustered than usual at the delivery of JVC’s new DLA-X55 model.

We really liked Epson's TW9000W, the company's earlier foray into the 3D PJ market. A 3-chip LCD design with Full HD resolution, the TW9000W was well-endowed with features, including an ISF calibration mode, THX certification, wireless HDMI and a 480Hz refresh rate to reduce 3D crosstalk.

It says much that JVC’s entry-level projector comes in where other brands' high-end offerings sign off. Priced at £2,900, it looks a veritable bargain when viewed alongside the company's £10,000 bespoke DLA-X95R flagship.

When we found our test rooms invaded by a glut of LED projectors a couple of years ago, we felt confident that LED lighting would soon dominate the projection world in the same way it’s taken over the TV industry. But we were wrong. In fact, since then most of the big names in projector design have quietly but surely backed away from using LED.

It’s been quite a year for Sony. The Japanese brand has set new standards in the TV world, and introduced a whole new product category with its 4K TVs and projectors. And now it’s continuing this return to form with its latest mid-range projector, the VPL-HW50ES.

This well-specified but inexpensive 1080p DLP projector could have many potential system upgraders considering projection for the first time. After all, for the cost of a 46in LED TV you could be enjoying images three times the size. It’s a tempting proposition, not least because this BenQ PJ is a beautiful-looking piece of hardware.

For most people, the fact that projectors usually require near darkness to work well makes them a non-starter for a normal family living environment. This is why Panasonic has rustled up the PT-AH1000E: a PJ designed to deliver bigscreen party thrills in light rooms.

Those seeking the visual equivalent of fine-dining are traditionally best served at a 4K digital cinema. An eight-million pixel image, spread large and bristling with detail, is a feast for the eyes befitting the planet’s premiere cinemas. But now cineasts have another choice – they can invest in the first consumer 4K projector and have a Quad HD cinema all their own. Yet, without access to a 4K video source, is there any point in shelling out the best part of £17,000 to own one?

Priced at £1,350, Epson’s EH-TW6000 appears a clone of the award-winning EH-TW5900, which can be bought for just £1,000. Despite the price gulf, the two are very similar in specification, yet differ in a couple of key areas.

With 3D’s appeal apparently fizzing out for some, our geekometers are pointing towards 4K resolutions as being one of the next big things in AV.

Sony made it pretty clear during HCC’s recent trip to Tokyo that it sees delivering uncompromising quality as the way to get its once-peerless reputation – and sales! – back. With this in mind, the crosstalk that hampered the brand’s first 3D projector, the VW90ES, needs to be made a thing of the past. Does the ‘sequel’ to the VW90ES, the VW95ES, back up this new brand philosophy?

US home theatre brand Runco is not generally associated with aggressive pricing. In fact, its most famous, compromise-free products belong squarely in the ‘if you need to ask how much it costs it’s not for you’ stratosphere. Today, though, I’m rather excited - and extremely startled - to be testing a Runco-branded projector that even I could just about imagine affording.
