The annual grumbles from certain quarters about OLED TVs only making relatively small technological steps forward every year do not apply to Sony’s new KD-65A90J.

This 65-incher delivers two substantial new chapters in Sony’s OLED story: a new panel sporting a laminated aluminium heat sink, so that it can be run more brightly, and a new Bravia XR ‘Cognitive’ video processor. The result is a premium picture performance...

TCL's first mini LED TV to hit the UK leaves John Archer mostly impressed, but ruing some missed opportunities

The big new buzzword in the TV world is mini LED. This premium backlighting technology uses much smaller LEDs than those found on conventional LED-lit LCD screens, allowing more to be deployed behind the glass. The result is a boost to both potential brightness and contrast, particularly if the mini LEDs – which typically number in their thousands – are driven by a healthy amount of separate dimming zones.

hccbestbuybadgev3Philips' 800 Series OLED TV adds top-drawer gaming to excellent picture quality, discovers John Archer

Philips' ability to harness its potent video processing to the innate precision of OLED display technology has, over the last half-a-decade or so, given the brand a new lease of life, and one that's seen it claim an ever-growing slice of the premium TV market in the face of competition from both established brands and aggressive newcomers. And I can't see it losing its grip if it continues to make TVs like those in its OLED806 range.

This budget-buy 4K set will appeal by virtue of its well-stocked smarts, tidy design and Dolby Vision support, says Steve May. But does its picture performance stack up?

hcchighreccomendSony's smallest ever OLED TV won't excite the gaming console cognoscenti, but its images still make a big impression on John Archer

The general TV trend these days is towards ever bigger screens. An interesting exception to this rule has emerged in recent months, though, in the comely shape of 48in OLED TVs.

hcchighreccomendSteve May reckons this 55in entry-level OLED TV is a belting buy for canny AV enthusiasts

LG's BX Series OLED TV is a tempting gateway to the joys of the screen technology. Positioned below the brand's headline-hogging CX range, it looks much the same, yet comes in at a significantly lower price thanks to a step-down image processor and a few specification compromises. Is the price saving worth such sacrifices? I think so.

While premium LCD TVs have long had brightness on their
side, they’ve always had trouble controlling exactly where that brightness goes, something that's arguably become more of
a picture quality concern with the step up to HDR content.
Enter Samsung's QE65QN95A, the brand's first TV to utilise Mini LED backlight technology.

Philips hits the right notes with this stylish smallscreen OLED. But is 48in big enough for Steve May?

You might be forgiven for expecting smallscreen OLED TVs to be a budget punt, stripped of extraneous frippery in order to better bring OLED technology to the mainstream. But there's no sense of any such cost-cutting compromise with this Philips, which uses the new smaller panel for a downsized version of its flagship 935 model, complete with Bowers and Wilkins sound system. Is this move inspired or a marketing misstep?

hcchighreccomendThere’s arguably no more cinematic experience in the AV world than watching a 4K Blu-ray movie on a massive OLED TV. A fact this 77in LG OLED77GX confirms with designer knobs on...

hcchighreccomendJohn Archer explains why Sony's latest mid-range LED LCD TV is arguably better for next-gen console gamers than its flagship models

While the original PS4 and Xbox One consoles trailed behind TV technology when they first came out, the Xbox Series X and PS5 are running ahead of most 2020 TVs. Graphics features such as 4K at 120Hz, variable refresh rates and automatic low latency mode switching have caught the vast majority of this year's displays on the hop, including many of Sony's own models. Oddly, the only game-friendly exception in its range isn't some high-flying, megabucks flagship, but the mid-range XH9005 series.

hccbestbuybadgev3Panasonic's Professional Edition OLED panel gets an IQ upgrade and the result is dazzling, says Steve May

There's never been a better time to invest in premium home theatre, now that multiplex screens have lost their silvery allure and cinema concessions now come with a side order of anxiety. Stepping up your AV game is the only sensible solution, and Panasonic's flagship HZ2000 is perhaps the ultimate flatscreen upgrade. Okay, it's not 8K, but for the movie sources of the here and now, it's unbeatable.

hccbestbuybadgev3John Archer auditions Philips' step-up 65OLED935 TV, which aims to add integrated Atmos audio to picture perfect processing

Philips has long understood the importance of video processing to TV performance. It was throwing huge amounts of computational power at LCD TVs when LCD TVs were barely a thing, with typically excellent results (albeit once you'd tinkered with some of the settings). Yet the addition of OLED to its portfolio has seen processing prowess come into its own like never before.

hccbestbuybadgev3Panasonic sets the bar high with a do-it-all mid-ranger that has a penchant for popcorn, says Steve May

Panasonic's multi-talented, mid-range HX800 LED LCD could be the screen home cinephiles have been clamouring for. Offering a feature specification and picture characteristics more becoming panels twice the price, it's a tempting proposition if Dolby Vision HDR and a blistering gaming performance are big on your want list.
