Not everyone has the space, or the desire, for a dedicated home cinema room where watching movies takes precedent over everything else. In this case a multi-purpose 'media room' is in order, where everyday living and high-performance AV entertainment live side by side.

Once you've had a demo of D-BOX seating, it's hard to look at your regular sofa again in the same way. It's no surprise, therefore, that the owner of this bespoke cinema room was seduced by the 'movie motion' experience after an initial recce at UK distributor Pulse Marketing, and insisted it was part of the conversion plan. As such, all the seats (from US brand Fortress) were ordered 'D-BOX ready'. The two prime seats in the front row are fitted with actuators – the remaining six can be upgraded easily whenever the owner wants.

The owner of this cinema room has an extra reason to love it – last year it was crowned Best Home Cinema in the £40,000-£100,000 category in the CEDIA Awards. Completed by London/south coast-based pro outfit Pyramid AV, it features native 4K projection and a state-of-the-art Dolby Atmos speaker configuration.

This issue’s pro install reflects a common concern – how to harness wasted loft space. The brief here was to indulge the owner’s passion for enjoying sports events in the company of friends and family, and to have movies and kids’ TV shows accessible from a simple touch-screen controller. Support for 3D was a must, too.

The award-winning project was undertaken by Midlands company The Big Picture, with the owner demanding a 'cutting-edge' cinema to match the modern-day tech of his new-build property. The installer was naturally responsible for AV, but also the interior décor, and the way both are mixed together is impressive.

While the premium picture palaces delivered by professional install outfits are guaranteed to get us salivating, a dedicated movie room doesn't have to be über-expensive. Proof, if you need it, comes in the shape of this basement theatre undertaken by FAB AV from St. Albans, with hardware and installation costs coming in at under £10,000.

This modern-looking media room is actually below ground, hewn from the unused cellar of a London townhouse by professional installers Finite Solutions. The company was asked to create a space that could be used for music listening, relaxation and – of course – bigscreen movie action. It set to work, first digging out the cellar to provide more space for what has turned out to be a very eye-catching setup.

The owner of this smart-looking media room didn't originally set out to own it. He'd actually called upon custom install outfit The Big Picture to establish home automation electronics throughout his house, with the idea of constructing an additional space for a dedicated cinema. But when this proved untenable, The Big Picture suggested turning the family snug into a movie palace. 'Being open to ideas, I challenged them to impress me,' he tells us.

A mid-room partition in this lengthy loft-based cinema enables an optimal throw distance for its 4K projector and creates space behind for discs and hardware...

For serious AV-holics a 40in 3DTV just won’t do. The best way (some would say the only way) to watch Full HD 3D Blu-rays is on a projector screen. This is certainly the opinion of the owner of this dedicated movie room, which flaunts JVC’s flagship X9 PJ for full-size 3D thrills.

Dug out of a basement in a London property, the first domestic IMAX cinema in Europe is certainly one of UK installer Cornflake's most prestigious projects. Built around the cinema company's Theatre Palais specification (there's an even more premium flavour for larger setups), it uses its custom projection and surround sound speaker/amp technologies to provide a state-of-the-art movie-watching experience.

This basement movie den in South West London is the work of custom installation professionals MD Integration, and is slightly unusual in that it was commissioned by the developer of the property rather than the owner. In the capital's red-hot housing market, it should certainly help the six-bedroom new-build stand out from the crowd.

AV install specialist Finite Solutions has offices in London, Cheshire and Leeds, but its work isn't limited to just the UK. This dedicated cinema room occupies what was formerly the billiards room of a chateau in rural France. C'est la vie.

Face it – your home cinema system may offer spine-tingling sonics and hi-def visuals to die for, but until you’ve got rid of the cable clutter, the mountain of plasticky remote controls and the BD-strewn carpet, some of your friends won’t be impressed. The owners of this gorgeous theatre room in North London won’t have that problem, though...

This professional project by South East-based installer Cinema Rooms involved a big transformation as the space designated for cinematic conversion used to be a kitchen, the owner having recently had a new one built in an extension. So out went the fridge, oven and sink and in came an Atmos-compatible audio system and laser-powered projection.
