Passive actively targets groups Chris Jenkins checks out a curious 3D projection proposition

Active shutter 3D technology can be expensive, particularly if you want to cater to a large audience, but what if you could convert an active shutter 3D projector into a passive one? Then you could use the dirt-cheap passive polarised glasses of the sort you get in cinemas.

A.C. Ryan has been responsible for some of the better networked multimedia players of recent years. Another entity that started rising to prominence at about the same time is the smartphone. The best-known example of this is, of course, the iPhone, which is rivalled by a range of devices running Google’s Android – a Linux-derived operating system optimised for handheld devices. However, some are now taking Android and building it into other electronic gizmos.

As thick as a brick, but smarter Adrian Justins organises and manages his media collection via USB

Out of the box, this is a non-networked version of AC Ryan’s PlayOn!HD media streamer, but you can add an optional £20 wi-fi dongle to change that. My sample came with a pre-installed 1TB HDD and there are 500GB and 2TB versions.

When I’m streaming Windows Replace your media player with a PC, says Chris Jenkins

The popularity of video downloading means that media players are becoming increasingly essential, even if your PC media source is in another room. But what if the PC is small enough to tuck under your TV? Enter Acer’s super-compact Revo 100.

Whizzing media about the house Wi-fi networking and a USB media server impresses Martin Pipe

If all you need is the ability to stream multimedia files to various players around the home, then this device is for you. The 4420 has a server that’s fully uPnP compliant, and boasts a feature you won’t find on the average NAS – the 4420’s integrated wi-fi capabilites enable you to set up an additional access point, or bridge any networking ‘gaps’ in larger homes.

It’s easy to overlook Amazon's Echo Spot.
It’s not overtly a living room smart speaker, like its bigger Echo brothers, and it doesn’t have
a (relatively) largescreen display like the Echo Show. To all intents and purposes it appears
to be a bedside clock, albeit one with delusions of grandeur.

hcchighreccomendImpressively specified, with fully integrated Alexa, the Amazon Fire TV Cube is easily the company's most versatile and sophisticated media player to date. But if you’ve already got a Fire TV stick, is it worth upgrading?

Faster than an Apple TV and thinner than a Roku, Amazon’s Fire TV streaming player is a little box with big appeal. It’s so good in fact, that it might make Prime Instant Video subscribers out of all of us.

Prime Music is a free part of Amazon's Prime service bundle, which includes on-demand access to a wealth of TV programming and movies (including 4K content), plus free next-day delivery on millions of Amazon purchases, cloud photo storage and a few other treats. A Prime sub is £79 a year, or less than £7 a month. It's very good value, but if you sign up, is Prime Music strong enough to have you cancelling your existing Spotify, Tidal or Apple Music sub?

Cut to the core Cliff Joseph still isn’t won over by Apple’s revamped rental box

The new-look AppleTV replaces the original 2007 model. It’s smaller than its predecessor, measuring a mere 3.9ins wide and deep, and just 0.9in high. The reduction in size – and price cut from £200 to £100 – was made possible by removing the hard disk. This means that the AppleTV can only be used to rent and stream video now, as there’s no way of buying and permanently storing anything on this model. However, you do still have the option of buying content using iTunes on your Mac/PC and then streaming them to the AppleTV over your home network.

John Archer is impressed by the new Apple TV – especially its remote – but questions how much of an upgrade it is from what’s gone before

Having left the DAC market alone for the best part of twenty years, Arcam is making up for lost time with an increasingly extensive range. The latest arrival is the irDAC that replaces the earlier iDAC. While it looks similar, the irDAC boasts more inputs (which are now 192kHz capable) and is completely revised internally to include a new DAC chip, improved jitter reduction measures and extensive power supply arrangements.
